damon saying the words makes them all the more real. it's the first time someone does say them aloud, and it shouldn't surprise her that it's damon.

even when something hurts, he refuses to remain anything short of unflinching. still, it's hard not to think of bonnie at the sight of all those candles and the strong presence of freya's magic. she thinks, perhaps, that she'll find bonnie in everything for some time to come. )

Her room is empty, but people have said ... they've said that doesn't always mean someone is gone for good.

( she can hold on to that, right? at least for a little while. )

[If Freya is surprised by Bonnie being gone, she doesn't show it. This moment isn't about her, and she can at least recognize that much. She'll go through her own process of grief later, but she knows why they're here, and it isn't to be the bearer of bad news.]

I take it you're here for a locater spell, then?

( damon glances at elena with a light wince as if he can sense how her heart sinks. his feels like it's at the bottom of his stomach, hollowed out. it's rare, but people do come back even after their stuff's gone as long as it's been within the month. it's just- it's extremely rare, and this absence is a reminder that wonderland is unstable. his gaze darts from her to freya, and he studies her for a moment.

right down to business. best to rip off the band-aide. further. what a hell month this has been for them all. )

We searched the whole mansion and the grounds, but we want to be certain.

( elena draws in a breath meant to compose her frayed nerves. )

We know it's a lot to ask. ( she knows because bonnie's done more than her fair share of locator spells while here. for freya herself even, when rebekah and klaus forced their hand. elena doesn't hold any of that against her. freya wasn't here for any of it. it wasn't her doing. )

No, it isn't.

[Not after Bonnie had done it for her. And she was a stronger witch than Bonnie was - there was less of a risk on her part. Did she want to be doing locator spells on demand for the rest of her days in Wonderland? No, probably not. But this was different.

This was Bonnie.

She starts gathering some candles and moves towards a clear area in the middle of the room which bore the signs of being used for spells like this in the past, with remnants of wax and chalk left behind. She places the candles and settles in the middle before looking up at them.]

You might want to give me some space.

( Damon tugs Elena back by the hand a few steps back until it seems like Freya has the space that she'll need. He's learned through Freya (while she drunkenly and mistakenly found her way to his room) that Freya's magic works differently than Bonnie's did. It means she likely won't have to channel anything through them to make it all work.

No memories to be exposed by the whole process.

He doesn't have much faith this will reveal anything more than what they already know, but in a world with such uncertainty and dangers lurking around every bend, it's important to get confirmation. He tightens his hold on Elena's hand. )

The floor is yours.

( possibly a surprise to those who know her, but elena 'fight me' gilbert lets damon pull her back.

her grip on his fingers is tight, not that she realizes it. she holds her breath, not that she realizes this, either. she's been present for several locator spells, but none with freya at the helm. she's not sure what to expect here, but she'd give up a memory and then some for this if necessary. )

[It's for the best really, because as soon as Freya sits in the middle of the circle, flames leap from the candle wicks and flare with the power of the witch in the center of it. While Bonnie's soft Latin chants can be melodic and soothing, Freya's harsh old Norse syllables carry a force and anger to it, almost as though she was commanding it to bend to her will, rather than simply requesting it.

It takes a few moments, Bonnie's bracelet clutched tightly in her hand, before the flames subside, and she opens her eyes with a small shake of her head.]

I'm sorry.

( something wrecks through the center of his chest when freya speaks. it's what he expected, but it doesn't make it any less painful for the atom bomb to go off inside of him. his hand tightens around elena's before he winds his arm around her back as if sensing she'll need- she'll need to hold on to something, to someone.

and he's right here. his fingers hook on to her waist as he pushes through the shrapnel in the center of his body. )

It's what we were afraid of. ( it's what seemed real when they stepped into bonnie's completely empty room, not a trace of her anywhere, not a spell book, not any of her herbs, not- not anything. )

She's not here.

I know. ( elena's voice snags on a shuddering breath. )

It was a long shot. ( damon told her as much, but elena insisted. she'd rather be disillusioned and safe than sorry. her fingers are bunched at the back of his shirt almost too tightly, her gaze traveling quietly over to freya, whom elena had never seen in action. ) Thank you anyway.

Of course.

[She herself wishes the results could have been different, but there's nothing she can do about that now. Instead, she simply nods, and extinguishes the candles with a wave of her hand.]

If there's anything else I can do, please let me know.

( damon heaves out a long breath as his arm winds around elena's back. he holds on just as tightly as she holds on to him. it's reassurance. he's still here. he's right here with her.

he tilts his head to the side with a half smile, because he knows this has already been a rough year for freya too. ...or a rough life from what she's told him. and. he decides to do what he does best. lighten the mood. )

Well, I don't know about you two, but I'd really rather not be sober right now.

( elena scoffs thickly; it's entirely possible she'd been seconds away from actual tears, which would've been embarrassing, and damon being damon has curtailed them. she rolls her eyes instead, though there's a fondness to the gesture that is unmistakable. ) Don't you ever get tired of bourbon?

( don't answer that. )

( damon waves a hand vaguely, and he'll answer the question anyway because how dare she even suggest such a thing. ) I don't, but I've already seen a very ancient, powerful witch drunk as hell... so I was thinking about a different hit to our sobriety. ( he moves to search through the nearest closet. )

[Her eyebrows go up a bit at the suggestion, before crossing her arms in front of her chest as she turns to watch him.]

I'm almost hesitant to ask.

[But she's still asking, and she doesn't sound opposed.]

[ Damon pulls brownies out of the closet. Look at how innocent his suggestion is, okay? The brownies were just made with a special ingredient. They're also delicious. ]

Have you ever tried pot?

[ This is a much younger Elena so he can't say that he knows if she's tried pot at this time or not. Her brother has, and she never approved of it, but her brother ain't around. ]

( ukw she is not going to dignify that question with an answer, as she can almost feel jeremy's eyes boring holes in the back of her head across universes.

(yes.)

another scoff. ) Damon, I don't think Freya's idea of feeling better is trying pot with you.

[Freya had been eyeing the brownies curiously as he and Elena discuss this, but when her name is mentioned, her eyebrows go up and she glances back to Elena.]

I may have slept through the sixties, but witches had been using ... let's call them recreational herbs for a very long time.

[She takes a few steps forward, before picking one of the brownies up off the plates.]

Though never quite like this.

( The sixties were the first decade that Damon had his emotions off, the first of many to come. Damon waltzes back over with the plate of brownies as he tilts his head to the side, narrowing his gaze at Elena. She doesn't answer, which is... answer enough. Cough. )

It will make everybody feel better though... or at least not feel so much for a little while, and don't worry. You weren't missing much in the 60s.

( He smiles, all pleased, when Freya picks one up, and then he slides the plate towards Elena. )

Alright, you too. Don't worry. I won't tell Little Gilbert. ( or tell Elena that she'll later get high with her little brother. )

elena purses her lips, looking off to the side to keep from looking too amused. ) This isn't about Jeremy. ( except it totally was. she likes her big sister posturing ok, but it's true that jeremy isn't here ... ok, so maybe one brownie won't be the end of the world.

she gingerly picks one up off the plate. ) Not a fan of the sixties, then?

( damon smirks knowingly since he knows better, but he'll just set the plate down in between the three of them, and then lean back in the nearest chair. he shrugs. at the time, he wasn't really a fan of anything at all. he leans back to look at the ceiling, taking a bite out of a brownie. )

Maybe I just needed to get high more to truly appreciate them.

( except not cause a high emotionless dangerous vampire is a bad idea. )

Could have had some profound moments about life and found things groovy. Or was that the 70s...

[Freya will move towards one of the comfortable chairs and settle in, before taking a bite herself. The flavor was certainly interesting, but it wasn't terrible either.]

Elijah doesn't really think highly of them, but I think we all know that Elijah can be a bit of a snob.

[It's said fondly. She adores her brother, but she also knows that he's the type to name drop Freud in the middle of a therapy session and has Opinions about long dead presidents.]

( elena sinks down to the floor, right next to the chair damon's decided to occupy.

she can't help the tiny smirk that tugs across her lips as she nibbles on a brownie. she likes elijah. he was the first mikaelson elena ever did truly like, outside of freya, but she cannot deny this either. ) Have you ever seen him wearing anything that isn't a suit?

( this is a legitimate question. )

[She would love to say yes. She's actually about to, before she takes a bite of the brownie and quietly chews for a moment because she really has to think about it.]

Does it count if he's just missing a jacket and tie?

( damon snorts lightly at that before he shakes his head, reaching down to wind his hand around her shoulder. )
