[ Steve got the memo from the strangers with their announcement and had therefore taken precautions. It doesn't sound like his shield will do any good against these angels, and so he'd gone to the closets for help -- although the only weapon they'd seen fit to give him is a cane that's got a taser built into it.

He didn't know such a thing even existed, but electricity can slow these things down, so it's better than nothing.

The narrow hallways of the mansion only leave Steve feeling claustrophobic, like he might get tracked down at any moment by one of the angels. It makes more sense to move outside into the heat of the desert where he actually has a chance of finding one of these things before they get him.

That's the idea, at least. But there's a strong wind shifting the sand around him, which drowns out a lot of noise he might have otherwise picked up on. Steve's in uniform this time around, the boots and protective covering serving him better in the desert environment. Shield on his back and cane in hand, he's so far unaware of Darcy's presence as he traverses the dunes. ]

[ Paranoia should drive Steve's every move, but the mansion doesn't have any influence over his mind during this event, and "Reckless" may as well be his middle name in most cases. At least when he's the only one who might end up in danger.

Part of it is also that it's near to impossible for him to perceive Darcy as a threat. The sunglasses she's got on don't seem that out of place either, given how bright the sun is shining out here.

He notices the broken off piece of wood in her hand and frowns, knowing for a fact that it wouldn't be enough to stop one of the angels. It sets off at least one alarm bell in his mind, but Steve starts toward Darcy all the same -- though his grip on the cane remains firm. ]

Yeah, it's me. What are you doing out here?

[ She better have a good explanation. ]
assembles: neutral, glance, casual clothes (never enough white shirt icons)

[ No, it doesn't make much sense. Darcy would have known to call for help, to at least make an attempt to contact one of the Avengers instead of escaping into the middle of the desert where she was an even easier target because she was isolated.

Darcy's been irrational about searching out their help in the past and she does have a penchant for getting herself into trouble (their trip to the Mirrorside is proof of that), so Steve still can't be sure.

Not until he takes another couple of steps toward her and notices the black veins sneaking up from the collar of her shirt. There's nothing normal about that, and Steve may not know a lot about these angelic monsters, but it doesn't take a genius to put this together.

His thumb moves on the cane to rest over the button that will generate a shock, and he stares her down. ]
You're not her.

[ There are a few reasons that the attack succeeds. First is the fact that the angelic creature does have that boost of speed that Steve isn't prepared for. Second is that despite his wariness, Steve hadn't been entirely prepared for Darcy, in all of her inexperience and innocence, to come at him so suddenly and with such fierce force.

Of course, it isn't actually Darcy. Steve wishes he could say that this is the first time that he's had a friend who's being controlled by an outside force assault him. How does this keep on happening?

The wood slams into his ribs with an impressive amount of strength, forcing him to double over as pain explodes from the point of impact and spreads outward. Steve gasps for breath and feels a tightness in his ribs that he knows can't be good.

Instead of falling over, he does what he can to press forward to Darcy. Or to what's controlling her, anyway. He'd been told that shocks would help to stun them, and all he needs is the time to get the hell away from here. ]

[ It's not a weapon Steve's used to, for obvious reasons. A cane that's able to let out an electric shock? He'd never even heard of such a thing, had no idea what the need for it would be in any normal situation. But he's not going to question it now, not when his life is in danger. For all he knows, Darcy might be capable of killing him right now, and he can't let that happen.

She would never forgive herself. This alone is probably going to be bad enough.

Watching as parts of her facial structure and body language twitch and rearrange themselves in response to the shock is disturbing, to say the least. It's something Steve would have scrubbed out of his memory if he could. As things are, all he's focused on is getting away, so he turns on his heel and starts to retreat -- but it's hard to be fast in the sand, even for him. Not to mention the burning pain that's running through his ribs and making it difficult to breathe. ]
