Summary: New Year's Eve Party
The Story:

[ Previously in the month all residents received an invitation to a formal event: a black tie affair to ring in the New Year. The ballroom and adjacent areas are decked out for the party starting at eight o'clock sharp, meticulously planned and executed, glittering décor to match the no doubt glittering attire as music pours into the halls from the dance floor.

Bars flank each side, service for all manner of alcohol unless a minor requests something, and the primary setting stage features an enormous clock for the countdown. ]




[ Where will you be when the clock strikes midnight? ]

[ it's that kind of modesty that isn't much modest at all. and why should she be? dancing is a skill just like punching, just like kicking, just like pulling a trigger. it's got all sorts of uses. ]

[A hum, as though confirming it was as she suspected rather than draw out the compliment further.]

So if you're not dancing tonight, is whiskey and conversation the whole agenda? Not that I'm judging if it is.

-- Just about. Although I've added in a bit of observation. [ she nods to the dance floor once more. ] It's rather a treat to see who can and who can't keep up to these tunes.

[ this ain't no drum'n'bass club remix. ]

Hardly fair, is it? Watching everyone else out on the floor and not giving them the same chance.

[Teasing, dryly but not maliciously.]

But you do approve of the music then?

[ peggy refrains from making any comments on what's fair or whether fairness matters. even teasing, she fears she might come off a bit overtly cynical. so, instead, she allows herself a genuine piece of laughter. ]

Oh, yes. Largely in part because it's good music. For a change.

[ no quarter given. ]

There's a lot of good music out there, Agent Carter.

[there's an air of humor in the way Natasha deploys the title.]

There's always good music. Always bad music too.

Explain that to Tony Stark. [ a beat. ] All he plays is rubbish. And I haven't liked much of what I've heard at other events, except...

[ oh, hell, why not. if anyone is a good sounding board for her adapting tastes, it might as well be another spy. ]

Elton John's not bad.

[ -- not that she heard that particular recording artist playing through stark's speakers. ]

The future holds more than just AC/DC and the Clash. I promise.

Not saying it's all Sinatra, but I imagine we could find you a few more recent artists you like.

I imagine you could. [ she won't deny it. ] I've listened a decade or two beyond mine. Similar genres, but I suppose with a bit of 'modern progress' tossed into the mix.

[ -- the record collection she pulls from on wednesday nights is rather curated. filled with treasures and treats, but nothing too radically different from what she's got a chance at enjoying. ]

Did you get as far as David Bowie? [You know, modern progress. Natasha's not exactly of the opinion Peggy would like it. Depends on what she was exposed to. There was a lot of ground there.

But it's a particular kind of milestone.]

I have to wonder what Elton John you've heard.

[ -- peggy shakes her head to answer. no bowie, not yet. although doubtless she's squirreling the name away with designs to return to it when she's keeping the sort of company around which she can stomach a vulnerability or two. because apparently first impressions and new experiences count as vulnerabilities, these days.

as for the second question, the one that natasha doesn't exactly ask, peggy hems and haws a little. ]

Too Low for Zero.

[ this lie is better told than the last one. peggy has flipped past that record so often in mister hunter's collection that she could almost believe she's listened to it. ]

Oh, all the way into the eighties. That's further than I'd have expected. Though... I imagine it's a little hit and miss.

[There's still humor in her tone, but she's probing too. How Peggy is dealing with so many people coming from her future.

Rather passive, casual probing, but still something.]

You have a favorite song?

[ the first time peggy heard any of the songs of this particular album, the mansion had been in the throes of an event. she had been living some alternate, parallel life -- making a living as someone's personal assistant -- and had chanced upon someone else singing to himself. the moment had left such an impression that later, well after the event had passed, peggy found herself thinking about it.

...and the second time she'd heard a song, albeit not one from the same album, it had been at a gathering similarish to this one. a wedding, however. the start of something big. after all, it was only after that night that the elton john record started appearing in among the albums curated for her wednesday evenings visiting mister hunter's room.

honestly, she hasn't quite had the guts to put it on the record player just yet. ]

More like a favourite side. [ peggy offers -- skating her way through this conversation in a way she'd not been able to manage during the last even when she and natasha spoke. ] The whole first one. Sometimes, I don't even flip it over. I merely move the needle back.

The whole side, hm? You know, I don't think it's that uncommon.

[A sides, after all. Natasha smiles a little, her head tilting. Funny to see someone so cagey and unspecific about something as mundane as music. Maybe that's how much people feel about her?

Probably not, though. For Natasha, it's more of a puzzle than a frustration.]

Well, I wouldn't have guessed, it, but I can see it. I'm Still Standing, right?

-- Have you got a favourite, Miss Romanoff?

[ and she doesn't just mean off that album, or of that artist. the floor is wide open. as though, just maybe, she's taking suggestions. it seems it might make for an easier path than their current one. ]

Me? I don't know if I have a lot of favorites. But I like a lot of things.

[It's definitely a better move on Peggy's part. And it works for Natasha.]

All things considered, I should probably say Stravinsky. [Wryly.] How about we'll go with some Nancy Sinatra for now. And Johnny Cash has a hell of a cover of Hurt.

She grows up. Has a career of her own.

[ she'd love to say good on her -- but of late, back home, peggy's had a bit of an eyeful of showbiz's sordid underbelly. and without knowing the details, she isn't quick to sing praises. ]

Does she become a crooner like her father?

Crooning might not be the word for it any more, but she had a few hits as a singer.

I suppose I'll be adding her to the list.

[ -- although peggy finds she can't generate anything from the closets that she doesn't already know. there's the library to consider, of course, but beyond that she relies on those she trusts to give her a hand in situations like these. ]

Hmm. For music. I'd say look into some Motown. You might find some things you like there.

I'll have to give it a listen. [ -- because she's not wrong: ] Just about anything would be better than more AC/DC.
