No. That's not really the bitch of it, though. The bitch of it is that I'd know whether the rest of 'em were alive or dead and when it came down to it... 'Least we'd still be together.

[But what's he supposed to do with the idea that they might not be and he doesn't even know for sure?]

[That much, Dipper can understand. He remembers how terrible it felt not knowing if Mabel was alive or dead when Weirdmageddon hit.]

You're guilty cause you know you're alive, but you don't know if they are. And you blame yourself cause you'd either know or be dead with them if you'd been there. Even though you being there wouldn't have made a difference at all.

[beatupgrass]

Exactly! [Wow. Emotionsplained by a kid. That's a new one. Granted, does it really take all that much to be better at explaining feelings than Rocket?] We're a team. We're supposed to do everything together and every time we split up, things get bad. For four frickin' years we said that wasn't gonna happen again, and then the second opportunity presented itself, I was the first to leave.

You didn't know what was going to happen, though. Otherwise you wouldn't have gone, obviously. You thought you'd see them again.

[beatupgrass]

[Right on cue, Quill looks down at him and says, coldly, "For the record? I know you're only going with them because it's the one place Thanos isn't."

Like a knife in his heart, that is.] Yeah, there's also that.

What, is he right?

[Cause just cause someone else says it doesn't mean Dipper's going to believe it.]

I don't know! I wasn't really thinking about it like that. I was thinkin' logically since Thor and Quill were in the middle of a pissing contest, but Quill knows me. He wouldn't have said it if he didn't think it was a little bit true, no matter how pissed he was. [He scrubs at his face.] Wouldn't be the first time I bailed out of a situation that was too hairy even for me.

Just cause he thought it was true doesn't mean it was. My sister thinks dinosaurs are part of the Hanukkah story.

[A beat. Rocket definitely does not know Hanukkah.]

Which... they're not.

The point is, even if that was part of your motivation? It obviously wasn't all of it.

[Yeah, Rocket has no idea what that means or why it's relevant, but the point... has been made.]

No... No, it wasn't. [And that means he has to let go of it, doesn't he? He sighs and the scene begins to break up, rather than loop.] Wait. Shit. I think that's working.

Oh good. [Dipper relaxes.] This is a really terrible kind of hell. It's so much more creepy and personal than fire and physical torture.
