it's the same to me, just a different name

Who: Graham Humbert and Emma Swan
Where: Graham's room.
When: October 13th.
Rating: PG-13? I dunno. There will be cursing and that's the most scandalous it'll get.
Summary: Graham and Emma coming to terms with a few things.
The Story:

He's dead.

Back home he is well and truly dead. There's no coming back from it either. All he can take comfort in here is that Regina has returned his heart to him. The heart that he fought so hard to find back home. Wonderland was a bit like a second chance to him, but not in the way he would have wanted. Years have passed since him and Emma stood together in the precinct with broken hearts and hopeful eyes. She's moved passed all of it, but for Graham it's still so fresh. It's so new. Emma has moved on. She's found a man that Graham knows very little about and prefers to keep it that way. He's aware of her relationship with Neal as well. He actually liked Neal. He was a good man. He had honor. It made Graham feel more at ease knowing that Henry's father was a good man. One that went out of his way on his first day here to make Graham feel comfortable and safe. His past mattered very little. What mattered was how he treated those around him now.

He asked Emma to meet him here. He's left his door open and taken up a post at his desk with a finished letter before him. He's written a few of them today. Wonderland takes and gives people very easily. He's learned that he could return home at the drop of a hat if the Queen desires it. Writing letters to those he never got a chance to say goodbye to was important for Graham. He had one for Emma, Henry, Mary Margaret and even Regina. He wrote a small one for Neal telling him to protect Emma and Henry. Once upon a time Graham protected Emma. She was still a baby, but he gave her family a fighting shot. Twice. He shoves the last letter into an envelope and writes the name on the front. He puts it into the desk drawer with the others and waits.

She was hesitant to go, at first. She'd had a lot of time to come to terms with Graham's death, but that didn't mean that he had. She'd had years -- years back home, and entire year and a half spent here in Wonderland to process it, though there had been a brief hiccup during his previous visit. He and Neal were both in similar situations; she'd mourned them both multiple times, though the first time she'd said goodbye to Neal she'd been mistaken. Graham-- there was no mistaking what happened to him. He'd died and it was, for all intents and purposes, her fault.

If she'd believed sooner, listened to Henry sooner, it never would have happened. Hell, even if she'd listened to Graham and believed what he'd been telling her, she might have been able to stop it. No matter how much time has passed, no matter how used to Graham being gone she's gotten, that's one thing she's never been able to let go of.

In the end, she shows up when asked, pressing her lips together as she leans in through the doorway and gives the open door a light, backhanded knock.

"Hey. You wanted to meet me?"

"It."

So that was how they were going to do this. Truth be told, it was more direct than she'd expected him to be, though Graham himself had always been a fairly open book -- if sarcastically-worded. She sighs, folding her arms across her chest, letting the distance stay between them. It's probably better. She doesn't feel the need to get any closer; there are too many memories and too much almost tangible guilty for her to feel comfortable doing so.

"That's fair. Most people don't get a chance to discuss it." Aside from drawing up wills and making arrangements, things Graham had been way too young to do. "I'll do what I can. We can talk about whatever you want."

"A day?"

It seemed like an awfully short window of time, a fact that distracts her for half a moment while the rest begins to sink in. Suddenly she understands what he's asking her, what might be in that drawer, and her stomach clenches at the thought of him preparing to disappear.

It wasn't right. Nobody should have to think that way. To know that when they left Wonderland, there would be nothing left. It was part of what made talking to Neal and Graham so damn difficult.

"You're not going to just fade away. You haven't. Nobody's ever-- I haven't forgotten." She moves to push up her left sleeve, baring her wrist to show that his bootlace is still wound around it. Much like the necklace Neal had given her, it was important to her to keep it close. The necklace had been stolen, but nobody would ever think to take a shoelace.

She pauses, the bluntness of it blindsiding her, but it's so pointed and so damn on the nose that she can't dodge it.

"Yeah. I do. If I'd believed sooner, it wouldn't have happened."
