[OPEN/MINGLE LOG] It's gonna be a Happy New Year!

Who: Anyone who wants to swing by!
Where: Fifth floor, the bar.
When: 12/31, from about 6:00 PM on.
Rating: PG-13 for now? Will update if necessary.
Summary: Informal New Year's Eve partying at the bar! People are more than welcome to pop in and out between other parties or engagements.
The Story:
[While there are a number of get-togethers of varying formality going on tonight, fliers posted down in the entrance hall and near the landings in the stairwells will advertise that the bar will be open and staffed well into the wee hours of the morning, and that anyone and everyone is welcome to stop in before, after, or in-between plans they may have elsewhere.

Most of the Christmas decorations that have been up all month remain, though some of the Christmas hats that were lined up along the back counter have been replaced with something a little more up-to-date. The garlands are gone, but all of the multicolored lights remain, strung around the edges of the room and across the ceiling, framing the windows and doors. While the staff, new and old, will be present throughout the night, people are also welcome to consider the bar self-serve, as the bright chalkboard sign proclaiming "HELP YOURSELF!" perched on the edge of the bar implies.

Whether you want to just stop in for a drink or linger for an hour or three, you're welcome to! Darts, pool and cards will all be in full swing over the course of the night, and the threat of karaoke may become very, very real as the night goes on. Happy New Year, everyone!]

[ Natasha's used to the unexpected popping up around her, however, and deftly takes a half-step back to give the girl room to maneuver, casting her a friendly smile as she waves off the apology.

Of course, it's then that she looks down far enough to see that it's not... specifically a girl she's talking to here. Well, it is, just not... the sort she'd expected.

Mermaids. Of course. They had talking woodland creatures at this point, so why not? ]

It's not a problem, there was no harm done. I imagine maneuvering through a bar full of drunk partiers presents quite the challenge. Are you alright?

[ How else are mermaids supposed to get around on land? Other than grow legs, of course, which Ariel has considered but the last time she made a deal for legs it didn't end very well. In the grand scheme of things, a wheelchair is decidedly more practical given the circumstances.

Ariel does look a little sheepish and gives a small shrug. ]

Well...to be honest I haven't been using this for very long. [ And she's already discovered she likes going fast. Difficult in an enclosed space like this though. ] But I'm alright! Thank you.

[ As alright as a mermaid in a wheel chair. ]

I really like your--um... [ "Thingamajigger"... ] ...shoes!

[ They're partially out of the way here - which is part of the reason Natasha had been standing here in the first place - so since this is new and interesting, she comes around in front of the girl and crouches down, careful of her dress but preferring to bring herself to eye-level. ]

Thank you, I'm rather fond of them myself. Are you new here? I haven't seen you around before. [ And she's pretty sure a mermaid would be pretty hard to miss after a while. ] I'm Natasha.

[ It is certainly easier to make conversation when she's not waist-height to everyone else around her. To the other woman's question--Natasha, it seems--Ariel nods with more confidence. Her favorite thing about this place is all the people she gets to meet. It almost makes up for how awful the timing has been. ]

Yes! I found myself in the--the pool not very long ago. [ It has a funny smell, but she copes with it. ] Natasha? That's a neat name. Humans have such interesting ones! I'm Ariel.

[ .............

Of course she is.

Natasha gives her a crooked smile and nods as if meeting a Disney Princess happened every day. Wonderland, please. ]

Thank you. Ariel is very pretty as well. I suppose the pool is better than some places it could have dropped you. And I hear there are dangerous things that lurk out in the deeper parts of the ocean in this place.

[ Ariel nods in agreement, even if it's not exactly what she would have wanted. The pool, she supposes, was the obvious choice if they didn't want her to dry out. That would have just been cruel, and despite the questionable nature of all their arrivals, everyone she's met thus far has been nothing but kind and helpful. Why would things go badly, right? ]

I've heard that too...but I want to see for myself! Has anyone ever been out that far? I haven't met any other merfolk here.

There was a pirate here for a little while, I believe he had a crew that was building a ship, but I don't know how far he'd ventured out. And as I haven't seen him in a while, I'm not sure he's still here. If it's something you're curious about, you could always ask over the network. Most people here are helpful and willing to share what they know.

And I'm afraid I haven't met any other merpeople here either, just you. Although again, people here come from a lot of different worlds. Some of them may be familiar with merpeople back home.

Over the network? [ Still getting used to the terminology, it takes a few seconds before it clicks. ] Oh! You mean when you can read and see people even though they're far away? It's really amazing. Humans have a different kind of magic, don't they?

[ Because technology might as well be a type of magic to someone who isn't used to it. ] A few people have...some called me a fae? But I hadn't heard that word before.
