The Story:
ELLIE
[ Ellie splutters as she scrambles away from the pool where the rift had almost dumped her. The girl pants, on her hands and knees, scuffed up from the near-incident. ]
Ugh, that was close. [ She heaves a huge sigh and rolls over onto her back. She'd figured Wonderland was too good to be true, but when the sky started opening, well... she'd started expecting hell and high water. Or, at least something apocalypse-like. Ellie had thought herself smart enough to avoid the things until other people started poking at them, and now... they apparently went somewhere?
She casts the nearest one, somewhere above her head, a dark look. Mercifully, and only by her own doing, did she avoid splashing into the water. Still gotta learn how to swim. Painfully, Joel's face comes to mind, and she exhales loudly again, laying an arm over her face.
She'd thought herself smart enough to avoid them, but then she'd thought that they might bring other people to her, or her to them. Maybe pull some of the others through, dead or alive. Maybe take her back, because despite the general fuckery of her world, it isn't fair for her to be on a (pretty much) vacation while Joel is alone and potentially dying back in Colorado. ]
Endure and survive. [ Ellie mumbles, still lying on her back. ] ... Right...

When he finds out that some people are ending up on the Mirrorside, he's even more certain that they shouldn't get near the tears. He's told his entire team as much, but whether or not they listen to him is another story.
It seems prudent to patrol the mansion and the grounds given that there could be Mirrors running around, but Steve isn't prepared for when a teenage girl comes hurtling out of one of the rifts and barely misses the fountain.
She looks shaken, so Steve jogs over and takes a knee at her side. ]
You all right? [ She doesn't appear to be injured, she probably just hadn't been braced for where the portal might drop her. ]

[ It's mostly true; she's shaken, but not too hurt. The girl winces, checking her knees, which are a little scuffed, and then pays Steve a second glance. ]
That's embarrassing. [ She mutters, shifting her weight. ] I hoped nobody'd be watching if I got flung out through the other side.

Maybe it had been a little embarrassing, but his first thought had still been her well-being rather than the possibility of teasing her. It occurs to Steve that she could be a Mirror for all that he knows, but there's no easy way to test that.
All he can do is ask and pay attention to the reaction he gets. He crosses his arms and looks her over. ] When you say the other side, you don't mean you came from the Mirrorside, do you?
[ It's not like all Mirrors are bad, but they do have a tendency to be, and Steve would rather cover all his bases. ]

[ She pulls another face, examining her elbow, which is slightly scraped. ]
They really need to work on the details in that pamphlet.
[ She sighs, then looks back up at Steve, hands on her hips. ]
I was just looking around and I may have... jumped into one of those things. But it just spit me out again.

Normally you can't, but other people have been jumping into these things like you did and ending up over there. I wouldn't suggest it.
[ She might be curious about what the other side has to offer, but it isn't worth it. Steve has some pretty painful memories of his trip over there.
Besides, she's got a scrape on her arm. Steve nods to it. ] We should get that cleaned up.
