The Story:

Common Room
The common room is a circular room where Gryffindor students can relax after a long day of studying. It is full of squashy armchairs, tables, and a bulletin board where school notices, ads, lost posters, etc. can be posted. The common room is decorated in several shades of red, which is associated with the house.

There are many windows that look out onto the grounds of the school, and a large fireplace dominates one wall. The mantle of the fireplace is adorned with a portrait of a lion. The walls are decorated with scarlet tapestries that depict witches and wizards, but also various animals. There are also bookcases located in the room.

Dorms
The Gryffindor dormitories are also located in the Tower, with two doors leading off from the common room that open to spiral staircases. One of them leads to the girls' dormitory, the other to the boys'. The stairs to the girls' dormitory are enchanted to become a slide if any boy attempts to climb them, but not vice versa, since it was deemed that girls were more trustworthy than boys... (Look don't blame me it's canon)

[She frowns. For him to say that with any kind of certainty is troubling, but it's not the first time she's caught Sirius being a little too down on himself. For someone known so well for his teasing and pranks, Sirius was haunted in his own way, though she could never really put her finger on why.]

Well, I think it's silly. I plan on you being with us for a good, long while.

[And her word is law, Black.]

Please. There will always be people who can be persuaded to forget that as soon as you turn on the old Sirius Black charm.

[She exhales. She could get in trouble for this, but--]

What if I told you I could find you a real, live animagus to help you with your work?

[ Don't tease him like that...

He looks at her curiously.]

You know an animagus?

I may know a few, though I'll have to speak to them first-- they haven't wanted to publicize it.

[Please let this not backfire.]

[John heaves himself into the chair across from Evie, looking far too worried for his seventeen years. Chevy is big enough that she can feed herself, yeah, but lost in a big place like this? She'll be lost forever!

Also he has concerns that she's big enough to take a house elf down. Ha HA.]

She hasn't been under my bed in days. She's usually there, or all over Sirius' stuff.

[ beckett nods, agreeing for the most part. ]

I'd probably do the same, if I could. I know going into this -- if I decide that this is what I really want to do after graduation -- that I'm going to hear and see things that I don't have the power to change. But if I do? Why not try to do some good, even if there's a risk of making it worse involved. It's better than not trying, don't you think?

[ man upstairs? ladies downstairs? she wants to ask, but doesn't feel like it's her place to pry that much. ]

Maybe he will. You never know with Hogwarts. We've had some interesting things happen here that are strange, even by magic's tastes.

Aren't there supposed to be magic barriers and stuff around the grounds? [ She asked skeptically, wondering if the older students are just pulling her leg with half the random facts they know about the castle. ] (Even if cats can apparate...)

Anyway! [ Coraline's attention keeps wandering, then eventually zipping back to the deck on the table. ] ... So, my fortune?

[ It sort of feels a little like begging for one, by this point. ]

Please-and-carrots?

Shouldn't according to who? Who says you shouldn't mourn someone you love?

[Sirius shakes his head.]

Don't feel bad about...feeling bad. That's just an unnecessary extra layer.

It must be under two years old, then,

[she replies conversationally, fully aware of the hand on her shoulder and Dan's tremendous flustering. Fingers laced in front of her, she purses her lips as they walk.]

My mother's wand had a unicorn hair core. They have very consistent performance, but aren't too powerful. Mine is dragon heartstring, so it's a little temperamental.

[Lily offers an encouraging smile, equal parts cautious and warm.]

A lot of people might not, but-- I do believe that no matter what the situation, if there's a chance you can help, a chance you can do some good, that you should always try.

[ Key word being "almost," of course. And it's good to have goals. Keeps you sharp. Keeps it interesting. And if it has the bonus of keeping his parents' blood pressure up? All the better. It's been a while since he last got a Disappointed Missive from home.

Rafe was feeling rather smug at the moment, having come up with the plan and all, but then Evelyn brings up the wherefore of it and. Yeah, there's a chance it was thought up after one too many climbs up the castle parapets with a certain Ravenclaw but that's beside the point. Rafe prickles at being so easily sussed out and shoots a glare out the corner of his eye. (It'd be more effective if she were a bit taller instead of mostly ending up directed at the top of her head.) ]

Are you interested in the idea or the inspiration behind it? [ Evie ought to know Rafe well enough by now to understand the clipped tone, and that it's more defense than anything else. At least he isn't rescinding the offer outright. ] No skin off my nose either way.

[ a shrug as she draws back. ]

Nobody said, it just... seemed like the sort of thing that's expected.

[ beckett sets the book aside and rummages through her bag for the deck of tarot cards she has with her. meret slithers off her wrist, coiling up inside the bag, making it easier for beckett to do a quick reading. she draws three cards from the deck, laying them out on the couch. ]

The Eight of Swords, Seven of Swords, and Two of Pentacles.

Even if you shouldn't. Especially if you shouldn't, in some cases. Or so I'd argue.

Yikes.

[ She grimaces, at the sight of the Eight of Swords. While she hasn't learned much about the cards' meanings, her instinctive interpretation doesn't seem pleasant. ]

That first one doesn't look too good.

Then you misheard.

[Evelyn is cut marble in form, but certainly not denying the allegation. She reaches up to adjust the knot on his tie, tightening it.]

Because I am an exceptional student with very high standards.

It can be, but not in this case. See how it's reversed? That's an indication of an open mind, while the upright would be the negative isolation and imprisonment. The position of the cards has as much to do with the reading as what's on their face does.

[ she points to the next card, the seven of swords. ]

See, this one is reversed, too. So instead of betrayal and deception you have some sort of rewarding challenge.

Oh! [ Relief floods her face, emotions on her sleeve. ] Oh, right, I didn't realize that. So that's... better, definitely?

[ Well now she felt like a bit of a dummy for panicking. Any student of divination was probably taught about that kind of stuff very early on. Coraline only knew some of the Major Arcana, from a left-behind textbook she'd flipped through once. ]

A challenge.... like a test? Or making a new friend in one of the other houses?

It could be, [ she says with an encouraging smile. that's a step in the right direction. ] The cards are more... Look at them like hints. It's really up to you to interpret how you let their message guide you.

So... if it's all up to how whoever interprets it, then there's nothing actually very magical about it at all, huh?

[ She seems to deflate a little, mout firming into a disappointed skeptical line. ]

I wonder why they even teach this stuff in wizard school.

[ the girl shrugs, ] That depends on how you look at it. I rather like that it's open to interpretation, personally.

[ and that this was an art that transcended the boundaries between magical and muggle, for even those in the world beyond magic's boundaries dabbled in things like tarot and crystal reading. she found it fascinating that they were able to draw results without any wizarding abilities. ]

Maybe because the objects and the process are magic, even if it's less precise and direct than other wizarding arts.

Maybe.

[ She shrugs, still feeling vaguely swindled by being told it's all up to whatever she wants to read into it. That makes the whole thing seem a little bit faked. ]

Even my muggle neighbors back home read tea leaves, sometimes.

Well, I don't expect it.

[Sirius strokes her hair.]

And I imagine your professors won't expect anything either today, if you want a day off. Just saying.

Isn't it the charm that got me the reputation in the first place?

[Sirius actually smiles a little.]
