Greg, Room 19, 3rd Floor

Greg's room is currently quite lovely. It's outdoors and still warm, and Wirt and Greg are at a bus stop, clearly getting ready to go to school. The leaves are just starting to turn, and in fact Greg is holding a red maple leaf, humming to himself and rocking on his heels as he turns it over. He holds it up to the light, picking out the little leaf veins. Wirt, on the other hand, seems as fidgety and moody as usual. Greg keeps glancing over in Wirt's direction, but Wirt doesn't seem to notice.

Eventually Greg speaks up.

"Hey, Wirt, isn't fall great? I love when it cools down and the leaves turn pretty colors, and Halloween is the best! What's your favorite thing about fall?"

"Huh? Oh, I dunno, I don't really like the cold. Uh...football season is okay, I guess."

Greg perks up. "Oh, yeah! Cause you wanna join marching band, right? You'd be so great in marching band!"

"What, no, that's--ugh. Never mind." Wirt folds his arms and looks away. Greg hums a bit, seeming not to notice Wirt's frustration. He's twirling his leaf by its stem now.

"Hey...Wirt? I had a great idea! After school today, do you wanna go on a frog hunt?"

"What?"

"A frog hunt! Summer's over, so the frogs are gonna be going away soon, and I wanna catch a frog before that! I've always wanted a frog. We can catch one and take care of it and name it and give it a nice terrarium and everything!"

The bus finally appears, rolling into view from around a corner. Wirt spots it and is immediately distracted.

"Oh, sure, okay. Yeah, sounds fun."

Greg smiles like the sun and throws his hands in the air, tossing his leaf away in the process. "Yeah! We're gonna find the best frog ever! Thanks, Wirt, I promise this'll be super fun!"

The bus rolls up, the boys get on board--Greg still grinning like an idiot--and then the scene starts over.

Greg has a lot of fun engaging in the scene at first, but sometime he prefers to sit back and just watch Wirt talking to thin air, because that's kind of funny. Other times a weird look comes over Greg's face as he watches and he looks away, seeming to be suddenly anxious about something. As the days go on, Greg spends less time in his room and can be found elsewhere, usually acting like his happy, upbeat self. But sometimes that change comes over him and he sits in a corner rubbing his forehead and looking worriedly out at the world as if something bad is going to happen.

Admittedly, Wirt probably should have checked on Greg right away once he realized there was an event going on. He got sort of distracted though, by both his own dream room with Sara and then by Beatrice and it's several hours before he actually makes it to Greg's room. He hasn't seen him yet today, and that alone is kind of weird, though for most of the day he actually hasn't been very worried about it. Actually, he's been in a strangely good mood today for reasons he hasn't been able to put his finger on. He still has his stray worries now and then, but for one of these Wonderland events? It's been pretty calm.

Still, it's been long enough since he's seen Greg that he's starting to get a little concerned, and there's a twinge of worry that things have been too calm and that Wonderland is about to throw something terrible their way.

He knocks on the door first and then opens it carefully, wary of interrupting something or seeing something he shouldn't.

"Greg? Are you in here? Um..."

Wirt looks up and around as he lets himself inside, shutting the door quietly behind him. He knows this place. They've been here every morning since school started, but...Wirt can't think of what morning it was. It clearly wasn't long ago, based on the weather alone, but if anyone asked Wirt if anything ever happened at the bus stop he would have just shrugged. It's just a bus stop, and similarly the Wirt in Greg's memory seems distracted too. This is Greg's memory? Wirt can't quite hear what's going on from where he is, but he can see Greg at least so he heads over.

The rumble of the schoolbus is loud, so he waits for it to leave again before he finally speaks up again. "...Hey, Greg."

There's that phantom worry again. Greg's never actually ever given much thought to his own emotions, mostly because he's not old enough yet to be thinking about them. When he does consider what he's feeling, though, it's always easy to categorize. Happy! Sad! Angry! Amused! And so on and so forth. Always nice and easily definable. It's always easy to tell why he's feeling what he's feeling. There's none of that mess that comes along in later years of mixed emotions and mood swings and not knowing what your emotions are even doing.

So it's weird, suddenly feeling worried or stressed or upset and not knowing why or where it's coming from. Outside of the actual feeling, it also feels...uncomfortable. Usually Greg is all about weird things and new things and different things, but this is just...not fun. It occurs to him that maybe this is what it's like for Wirt, and maybe that's why he's so confused and upset all the time.

He hears his door open. Greg is in the process of just watching the memory play out right now, and he turns back to Wirt with a vague frown. The frown melts into a grin when he sees that it's Wirt.

"Wirt! This is an event, right? It's kind of nice, like when there's a movie in your brain, but now you can actually see it outside your brain for real! It's really realistic. Look, I can pick up this leaf!"

He bends down and picks up a yellowing oak leaf from the sidewalk.

Wirt only has a split second to process that Greg had been frowning at all before something comes over him. It's a little milder in Wirt, but Greg's happiness is almost contagious. That's the only way Wirt can reasonably explain the rush that passes through him, and why he's able to smile back so easily for once.

"Yeah...it is pretty cool, I guess. There's one in my room too. I think everybody got something like this."

At least that's what it seems like so far, and none of them have been bad things. Not that he's seen a ton of them, but he's seen enough to get it, he thinks. This is the first time he's ever actually entered one of these rooms that wasn't his own. He's not sure what he was expecting, since Sara plays on loop in his room, but it's...weird, watching himself. Maybe it was different with Beatrice's room since he was a little kid in that one, but he doesn't like being able to look himself in the eye. He waves a hand in front of memory-Wirt's face, trying to get his own attention, but it doesn't really work.

"Kind of weird too," he says. "But hey, at least it's not something dangerous, right?"

It better not be something dangerous, anyway. He likes that this one has been kind of okay, and he'd rather it stay that way, thanks.

The idea that Wirt has something nice and happy in his own room cheers Greg up quite a bit.

"Really? Is it the same in your room? The same bus stop and all?"

Greg hasn't quite clued in to the fact that this is all memory based. Sure, he knows that his own room is playing one of his happiest memories for him, but he hasn't actually talked to anyone else. For all he knows, everyone just got a scene involving something nice happening at a bus stop.

"I don't think it's dangerous. It's too nice! I guess Wonderland doesn't usually have very nice events, huh?"

"No, it's..."

It's Sara, but having to try and explain that to someone else is kind of mortifying, even if it's Greg. His face goes pink, and he waves his hands in front of himself.

"It doesn't matter what mine was. I-It's not anything important or significant or-- or meaningful," he says, hurriedly. "But uh. I think everyone got a different memory in their rooms."

Despite his apparent uneasiness, thinking about what's in his room does make him at least a little happy, and whatever's there doesn't seem like it's a bad thing, even if he's trying to keep it a secret. He's full of happy crush feelings, but he's fifteen so those fluttery happy feelings are entirely embarrassing to talk about.

"Definitely not dangerous though," he says, glad to have that confirmed by Greg. "Everyone's memories have been good ones, at least from what I've heard. But...yeah. It seems like they're not that great most of the time."
