Summary: The Red Queen has thrown a carnival for everyone!
The Story:


From Friday, March 9, through Friday, March 16, the gardens and grounds of the Mansion will be a sprawling a carnival. The masked, unspeaking vendors will be selling trinkets and running free game booths. Carnival rides, exhibits, and foods represent all of the various cultures of those currently residing in the Mansion.


Of particular note, and perhaps incongruously, everything is decorated with red hearts.

[Taako's not much for putting himself in direct, obvious danger if he can find a way to instead put someone else in danger. So he totally gets the expression he spots on Wirt's face as he approaches to stare up at the drop tower too.]

This is like the elevator from hell. Except less fleshy and talkative.

Yeah...

[Wirt's kind of lost in thought, staring up at this horrible thing. Who could possibly enjoy being pulled up into the air and dropped that way, with something so rickety and unstable keeping them from certain death? Who could be so reckless with their own life that they feel no fear that cords will snap and harnesses will slip and they will free fall to hard uncaring earth below? Who...

...Wait. Fleshy?

Yeah. Yeah. See, that reaction alone should've kept Upsy from ever seeing the light of day. This is why nerds need us non-nerd to tell them they're going mad with power and also bad ideas.

[Taako shakes his head as he stares up at the bizarre machine throwing people at the ground at top speed.]

This was probably originally meant to kill people. Like, picture spikes at the bottom. Diabolical.

[singloversing]

That...that just raises a lot more questions than it answers.

[Upsy? What?

All it takes is watching one drop for Wirt to agree wholeheartedly though.]

Oh, definitely. There's like, literally no way someone hasn't died on one of these things. It looks like a torture device, even without spikes.

[Taako briefly indulges in a fantasy about putting Lucretia on the ride, but dismisses it. It's at once too cruel and not cruel enough.]

And yet here it is like it's a normal thing. It definitely wouldn't be normal at a fair where I come from. Although, I dunno. Maybe your kinda folks are making this stuff all the time? I never hung out in too many gnome towns, even on tour.

[singloversing]

My kind of folks?

[It takes Wirt by surprise, and he bristles when Taako elaborates. He thought he'd left those accusations behind when he finally ditched his costume. The whole thing is a weirdly sensitive subject, it seems.]

I-I'm not-- I'm not a gnome.

[Taako blinks, turns and looks the kid over. Huh. He did ditch the cone hat, but.]

...Did you used to be?

...Not literally. It's...kind of a long and really, really stupid story.

[A stupid story in the sense that let it go on way, way longer than it should have.]

In my world they aren't real. It was, um. A costume. It wasn't even a gnome on purpose I just thought it...I don't know. It looked cool? It didn't look cool. I don't know what I was thinking.

So you were dressed up like a character in a story?

[He gets that, at least. And he also gets that the kid is obviously uncomfortable. He just doesn't quite get why?]

It was pretty accurate. Like. As gnomes go, it was probably as cool as it could be.

[Of course, he's been to a lot of worlds and seen a lot of shit, so who even cares about accuracy. Or being cool. Or anything at all.]

Soooo. No gnomes, but your world's got, like, machinery, right? Just nothing like this?

Not exactly? I mean, gnomes are in stories, I just...wasn't trying to be anything in particular, I guess.

[It was just a cool costume gone horribly wrong, and for way too long. He's weirdly thankful for the change of subject.]

Um, yeah. Like, we have some of the other rides? Like the Ferris wheel and the roller coasters and things like that. But I mean, at least those don't look like they're actually out to kill anyone like this thing does.

[Okay, actually, Taako gets that. Other than dressing up as a mongoose that one time, he'd usually rather just wear sick clothes than a costume.]

I think I've seen the wheel thing before. Nothing like this thing though. Or that giant, like, train? But tall for no reason? Is that actually fun?

[singloversing]

Oh, the roller coaster? They're uh-- less obviously dangerous, but still not really my thing. They bring you up the first hill like, agonizingly slowly and then after that you zoom down at top speeds. I mean, don't get me wrong. It could definitely still kill someone, but it doesn't have death trap written all over it the way that thing does.
