While You Were Tearing A Hole Inside Of Me, I Was Taking Control; Open

Who: Wynonna Earp and YOU

Summary: Wynonna tries out some ability disks for fun and profit. Pick a scenario and have fun with her. Prose or Actionspam welcome. Also other threads for the month will be in here too.
The Story:

a. the training room

The first disc Wynonna puts in is one labeled "super strength" and she wanted to test it out properly -- which means she can be found lifting up some of the equipment and putting it back down after, just because she can. She can also be found punching sandbags and sending them flying into the wall with the strength of her punch. It's pretty badass, honestly. And if anyone else with powers is around she might be challenging them to a sparring match to see how she can hold her own against them.

Come on. Let her have a little fun.

b. the beach

The second disc she tries is one labeled fire abilities. She's glathered some wood and other materials and is trying to start an impromptu bonfire but here's the problem -- once she starts the fire she doesn't really know how to control it and it is quickly becoming quite unwieldly and dangerous if someone doesn't intervene and help her control it.

Please help her, someone.

c. damon's bar

After the incident with the fire she's feeling a little more cautious about things. She can be found sitting behind the bar like she often is, holding a disc that she seems to be considering deep in thought. The power listed on this one is magnetism -- an ability that reminds her of Bobo Del Rey and a lot of the unpleasant memories she has of his particular power causing problems for them back in Purgatory. She's almost curious to try it just to see what it feels like -- but she's not so certain. She might need some encouragement.

[it doesn't occur to wynonna how much it probably sticks out to people, that it would be something people would notice and ask about. maybe it should be? she's not always the most observant person herself so that probably doesn't help.

anyway, for now she is blissfully unaware of peggy's observations.]

Isn't it? I feel so different than I did a year ago.

[a year ago she had still been fresh off of willa's death and angry and lonely -- and while some of those feelings might still persist wynonna is also happy here in a way she hasn't really been well ever in her life before.]

Now that's a toast I can get behind.

[she takes a swig of her own drink.]

It would seem that way. They must like us.

[ a bigger mystery for another time. peggy has learned to content herself with cracking open, unwrapping, decoding smaller mysteries. personal mysteries. she's swapped the larger puzzle for the littler one -- because the way her wheels spin in wonderland's mud makes her feel mighty discouraged, but she's learned she can at least navigate its people.

well. most of its people.

she settles properly in her seat and leans an elbow on the bar. ]

Provided there's any rhyme or reason to it at all. [ then, gently switching gears, she tilts her chin: ] How are you feeling about your one year anniversary, then?

Not the Queens, apparently.

[it seems almost as if the queens were as vulnerable to the whims of wonderland as the rest of them, which isn't sure what to think about that, honestly. wynonna doesn't trust authority figures easily but she had a decent conversation with the white queen, who had promised to intervene if doc's mirror ever caused trouble the way revenants are often want to do --

she doesn't necessarily trust that promise, but it was there all the same.]

Mixed, I guess. [wynonna admits with a small shrug of her shoulders.]

Sometimes I feel guilty, because I should be trying to get home more than I am. But as crazy as this place is -- I have friends and people who actually like me here. It's been nice not to be the town pariah.

[ there is something in what wynonna says, a kernel, that peggy can respect. while she would never go so far as to call herself a pariah -- she can certainly admire how wonderland's unwilling residents prove themselves far more receptive, far more accepting, than most communities back home.

beyond that, she can certainly respect the honesty with which the other woman speaks. owning her occasional guilt in a way peggy refuses to acknowledge. aloud, in mixed company, she is a steadfast supporter of getting the hell out of dodge. if something has changed at heart -- if something is changing at heart -- then she hasn't felt capable of announcing so to most anyone. ]

For what it's worth, [ she aims for conciliatory; she nearly misses the mark, ] I'm not certain what even a wholehearted attempt could accomplish. God loves a trier, as the saying goes, but trying to escape this place has a history of bringing down misery.

[pariah is nicer than what the people in purgatory would call wynonna, that's for sure. and some of them might have justifiable reasons a lot of them didn't. here in wonderland, however, wynonna doesn't have that baggage. she can control who knows her story and what they know about it, and that has been immensely empowering to her over time.

wynonna, if nothing else, is honest most of the time. she doesn't tend to mince her words and she's been told time and time again that she has a terrible poker face.]

It does seem that way -- not that I've ever tried particularly hard myself, but from the little I've seen, it doesn't end well for those who do.

I landed here in the immediate aftermath of one such attempt.

[ one that, all things being equal, she's now attempting to see attempted for a second time. perhaps it's an odd choice of goal, particularly when it's one she pursues shoulder-to-shoulder with the person she might-maybe-could love. a person who comes from another universe entirely.

it's almost as though that half-confession has caused her to double down on an effort to leave. one step forward; two steps back. ]

It wasn't pretty. [ goes without saying, maybe. ] And I worried for a long time that it might have left a discouraging taste in many mouths.

It probably did. This place can suck enough without making it worse for yourself.

[wynonna doesn't do a lot to rock the boat here, for better or for worse. maybe because she's actually happy and she wants to cling onto that for as long as she can. she'll fight and help other people do the same when she needs to but beyond that?

she doesn't get as involved with wonderland as some people do.]

I think especially with the Queen of Hearts people were worried about how she might respond.

You're not wrong.

[ peggy chooses not to engage with the point about the queen of hearts. not because she disagrees, or because she's disinterested, but because wynonna's earlier phrase offers up more fertile ground.

only now, with a subtle flicker of her gaze down to wynonna's ring finger, does she broach the topic quite literally on hand. ]

I've had someone share their theory with me that perhaps one way to best Wonderland, so to speak, is to take what happiness from it we can. That if we allow it to make us miserable, we've essentially lost before we've begun.

Was that person Ray Palmer? Because I am pretty sure I've heard him say that too.

[but he was gone now. as was sarah. they were some of the first people wynonna befriended here, and it's a stark reminder that whatever anyone has here that makes them happy, it can be fleeting -- so you should try to grab onto it while you still can. and wynonna is nothing if not stubborn.]

I think, whoever it was, they were probably right, the best way we can stick it to them is by finding things to be happy about, things to celebrate.

It wasn't Ray. Surprisingly enough.

[ because peg will certainly admit that it sounds like something ray might have said. and it seems as though she might leave it at that until-- ]

But it was someone rather close to him. A comrade from the same team and home as him. [ it's odd to so much as hint at discussing rip hunter. so, as she takes another drink, she continues: ] Regardless of who said it, I think I'm beginning to appreciate the wisdom more and more.

[wynonna doesn't know rip, or what he may mean to peggy, so the weight of the comment is lost on her. she takes another healthy drink from her own glass.]

Me too. [she places the glass down, playing with her ring a little. it's a strange thing, allowing yourself to be happy, because when you do you also leave yourself vulnerable to getting hurt --

in the past that fear would have paralyzed her. it doesn't now.]

I asked if it was Ray because I remember when he and Sarah got married -- they acted like it was the biggest sign of protest they could give to Wonderland, and that kind of attitude is something I can really get behind, you know?

Do you recall the man who officiated the ceremony? Speech and all? [ a tilt of her head. ] He's the one who said it. I don't half wonder if he had their wedding in mind when he did.

[ ah, yes, now's the ideal time to address the ring. ]

Is that your plan, then? Get married here in defiance of Wonderland itself?

[ it's a pretty idea -- at least for other people, she thinks. ]

I do, vaguely. [the wedding was a bit of a blur, in some ways. it had been her first time going to one. she has always assumed she'd never be invited to one except for maybe waverly's --

and now she's going to have her own. how weird.]

It wasn't until Doc asked me, honestly, though I guess I should have seen it coming that he would. Once, when things were bad back in Purgatory, he joked about stealing me away from everything to start a life together on a farm. I thought he was being absurd -- trying to make me laugh -- but I think he kinda meant it. I was never the sort of girl who saw herself married or settled down, I just figured that wasn't in the cards for me.

[and wynonna has been good at not allowing herself to want things that were out of her reach.]

That's just the thing about card games -- you can run the probabilities all you like, but you won't ever fully shake the element of chance.

[ which is just a prettified way of saying that they could none of them ever be quite certain what was or wasn't in their cards. easy enough for peggy to say about someone else; less easy should it ever come to saying it about herself. ]

Congratulations, Wynonna.

[ because although it hadn't been outright said, the difference had at least been noted. and the circumstances half-described. this time, peggy raises her glass (half-consumed) to a nicer toast. ]

And nobody is as good at bluffing as Doc is.

[if they're going with the card analogy, she might as well go all in. doc was as famous for his abilities as a gambler as he was his shot, after all.

the smile that spreads across wynonna's lips is genuine -- sure, most people would say congratulations no matter what but she knows peggy well enough to know the other woman wouldn't say it if she didn't actually mean it.]

Thank you, Peggy.

[she clinks her glass against the other woman's, draining the rest.]

An engagement should be a lovely, exciting time. [ she does drain the rest of her drink, too, before tapping the glass as if to suggest she could do with a refill. ] Both of you should make an effort to enjoy it -- despite the obvious pressure you might feel to get the vows said sooner rather than later.

[ she certainly lets herself feel more a little happy for wynonna. perhaps it's easier, she thinks, knowing that at least she and doc are sourced from the same place. if they can manage it here; maybe they can manage it at home. ]

We haven't really discussed when we're doing it yet [it's a discussion they'll need to have soon enough, but it was only a few days that he proposed at all.]

It probably won't be as big as Ray and Sarah's was -- that's not really our style. I think we'd both feel more comfortable with something smaller. Just a few close friends.

[there's a pause for effect as wynonna refills both of their glasses.]

Like you.

[ there's a minor clearing of her throat. what, like her? perhaps after this long she should be used to people coming out of the woodwork and calling her friend. jane does it all the time! sunburst insists. and now that wynonna mentions them again...

ray and sarah had been among the very first. and so much good had sprung from it, despite peggy's early reluctance. the thought puts a little cryptic smile on her lips as she lifts her fresh glass and contemplates the whiskey inside. ]

I hope you're not simply saying so to be polite. [ she decides to play it off with a kind of wry mock-diffidence. ] I've become quite social, these days, and if you pick a date I might actually turn up.

[ray and sarah had been among the first to call themselves wynonna's friend too -- not just here but pretty much ever and it had done her a world of good. if she had not had sarah to talk during some of those earlier freak outs she probably would have screwed things up by now.]

I don't know if you're noticed this about me, but I don't tend to say shit just to be polite.

[she's friendly there she used to be, but at the end of the day wynonna doesn't have a lot of patience for pretending to like people she doesn't.]

Would it sweeten the deal if I promised there would be whiskey and donuts?

Immensely.

[ she responds, although there remains the faint understanding that peggy would gladly attend regardless of those two conditions. although a staunch cynic about somethings, and although she has had herself one rather emotionally cancelled wedding, she doesn't allow those detractors to interfere with a happiness felt on someone else's behalf.

indeed, she's smiling. ]

Was it a very classical proposal? On bent knee and all?

[ what? surely, she's allowed a more human interest. after all (according to wynonna) they're friends. friends ask these sort of things. ]

Of course it was -- Doc is pretty extra about that kind of stuff, I'm pretty sure he practiced what he was going to say ahead of time too.

[as it had apparently been on his mind for months now, since around the time she finally blurted out the L word during the carnival. she really had had no idea. nor does she have a clue that it took him weeks to get the right ring from the closets.]

He may seem rough around the edges but Doc is a big ol' softy and he loves his grand romantic gestures. It's kinda nauseating, honestly, but like, in a very endearing sort of way.

I suppose there might be a certain appeal in it. [ peggy navigates the rather endearing accusation of nausea leveled against doc -- and somewhere in the pit of her heart she can't help but draw quiet, loose parallels. ] Not in the gestures themselves, maybe, but in a man willing to act on his feelings.

[ she nods through her conclusion. ]

And act on them with more celebration than self-imposed shame. [ actually, considering all the conversations she's had with doc... ] He's a good man. You're both lucky to have found one another.

Yeah -- I think there is. I never really had that before. Most guys I dated before didn't even really want to be seen with me.

[date is also...a strong word as mostly she had a lot of one night stands and flings, though there were a few questionable boyfriends thrown in there as well.]

We are. Though, if you ever tell him I said that, I'll have to kill you -- he will never let me live it down.

[it's said in jest, mostly. doc could be a bit of an ass sometimes, but so could she. it's part of why they get along as well as they do.]

[ no judgments here, wynonna. the last man she dated (properly) was a pencil-pusher who tried to dissuade her from active service. and very nearly succeeded, at that. there's a reason she then took a seven year dry spell... ]

Rest assured, Wynonna, that your confession is safe and secure with me. [ ... ] I think we can avoid any death by retribution.

[yeah, that would be enough to turn anyone off dating, wynonna would never be able to be with a guy who wanted her to change or be anything other than who she is.]

Good, I prefer not to kill the people I care about, when I can help it.

[of course, a lot of the time back home it's been out of her control, but that's neither here or there.]
