Summary: Let's go to this creepy tavern and ask for some directions! A log for staying nice and dry inside.
The Story:




For the duration of the event, the mansion has become a dingy tavern. It has two floors, the bottom being the main tavern and the upper floor has six bedrooms with one bed and one magic closet in each room for everyone to fight over, unless they don't mind sleeping on the floor or in the tavern somewhere. With the amount of people in Wonderland, everyone is cramped together and it will be very crowded. The closets will work, however they will only provide clothing and items from time periods long gone (though they do not seem to be bound to any particular time period). There are no employees to be found in the Tavern, but there's a working kitchen with a wood fire stove and enough food and drink for everyone to last the entire event comfortably. There's even a stage with musical instruments to entertain yourselves with! There's no electricity, but plenty of candles and lanterns around.

For the entire length of the event, it will be dark outside. In addition to the never-ending night, it will pour for four days straight, and it will all seem rather ominous once it becomes apparent the sun isn't coming out. Pretty much all signs will suggest that everyone should stay in the tavern and eat, drink, and be merry with their stupid new names. But it really is tight quarters, and some might be curious to see what else is out there. Maybe there's another place to stay out there, or something. Maybe the Beast Alice spoke of is out there.

THE FOOL | OTA

[ ... well, even if it's super crowded and nobody can say anybody's names, this tavern thing is already way better than the Christmas jail was last month. So when it comes down to it, The Fool isn't going to complain all that much.

Actually, this feels like a really easy situation to get through. It's ideal purge-planet rules all over again: hole up and stay holed up until the event passes. Go out into the rainy, creepy forest and probably die. The best thing to do seems pretty obvious to him?

The Fool's main activities of choice will be starting tentative conversations with strangers, especially if they look to be around his age, and occasionally gravitating towards windows/the stable when things start feeling a little too claustrophobic. Fresh air is fresh air regardless of how many people are standing in it or how rainy it is outside, right? Gives him the freedom to reflect on how much he misses his usual yellow t-shirt. He's also more than willing to try his hand at arguing with people who want to go exploring in the woods, however ineffective those efforts ultimately are. ]

[Hey, The Nurse thinks, you're not The Fool!!! That's not a nice thing to call you, especially when you were so helpful during the goblin fiasco! In fact, she's relying on you just a little, following you around when she get away with it.]

[ She can pretty much get away with it for as long as she'd like to try, honestly. With as jammed in as people are most of the time, the Fool finds a certain comfort in hanging around faces he's already familiar with. And besides that, it's never been hard to beat out the Rickiest Rick in terms of being pleasant company. He's all about it. ]

Um. So, h-how've you been doing? You know, since all the crazy holiday monsters and stuff?

Ah! Oh! I... I've been fine, I guess... I mean... I didn't die, and, um, I th-think all my memories are normal... Except for people's names...

I... I never got a chance to properly thank you for all you d-did for me back then... If there's ever a-anything I can do for you...

[ Nervous teens, unite. The Fool's face reddens a little-- it's been a while since he tried rescuing someone and had it actually work out in the end without a lot of other horrifying stuff in between. Nice change. ]

Oh, don't worry about it. I couldn't just leave you there or anything, that wouldn't have been the right thing to do. I-I'm just glad it worked out okay, you know? Those goblins were some pretty nasty, nasty pieces of work. Like, just really terrible.

You're so nice... I-I don't know how handle it, honestly... But I meant it! I-I'll do anything you want... you can do anything you want to me!

You can draw on me, o-or use me as a step-stool, or...

O-Oh my god, that sounds awful? I mean-- n-not, not like you're awful or anything, th-that just sounds like some really terrible stuff to be doing to someone. Do people just do that stuff to you? [ He feels bad for her. This is some kind of general lack of fighting spirit that... he can actually really relate to. The Fool isn't sure he's ever noticed that in an attractive teen girl before. Maybe it's a strict C-137 dimensional thing. Maybe the fact that he almost never talks to girls has something to do with it.

She's seemed super nice from what he's seen of her. ]

[She looks down at that, nervously wringing her hands and fingers.]

I'm sorry... I-I didn't mean to make you upset! I'm no good at talking to people at all... But, it's only right to answer you.

I, um, I was kind of b-bullied a lot growing up... I'm sorry to complain to you about it!

O-oh, don't worry about it, it's fine. I mean, when terrible stuff like that's happened to you, i-it's probably good to get to complain about it sometimes. Like, bullying is probably-- that's the kinda thing that anyone should be allowed to not be happy about, right?

[itwouldbeatragedy]

[The Hybrid's only spoken to the Fool once, but that isn't going to stop him from joining him near a window, where the air is freshest. The smell of rain is welcome over the smell of meat humans stuck in the small place.]

Hey. [He raises a hand in a vague wave, a little tentative in case he's not a welcome interruption.] How are you doing?

[ The Fool tends to be the sort to frown at a default, but the frown he's wearing relaxes a bit once he recognizes and places the Hybrid. It's easy to try to think in terms of people he met back home instead of people he's only ever met here. ]

Oh, h-hey! [ Definitely a welcome interruption. ] I think I'm doing pretty well. For everyone being stuck together here like this and all, I mean. You know? At least we've got somewhere to keep out of the rain, huh?

[The Hybrid nods in agreement. He'd prefer a somewhat larger place to shelter from the rain in, but it is what it is.]

There are a lot of ways it could be worse. [He's doing his best not to dwell on all of the other ways it could be better, too.] Do you have trouble with large groups like this?

[There was something about the way the Fool responded that makes it sound like that might not be the case. Kaneki doesn't trust his instinct on that, though--he's not always the most perceptive when it comes to reading people.]

I-I dunno about trouble, or anything. Everyone's been friendly? [ Color him confused. It's not much different than his usual color. ] You sure don't get used to not having much space, though. Mostly I feel bad that everyone keeps-- stepping on each other's feet and tripping. But boy, there's not much anyone can do about that.

No, I guess not. It seems like going outside for too long isn't the best idea either.

[The Hybrid sighs. He's in a similar situation to The Fool, it seems, in that he can navigate this kind of situation well enough to get by, but he doesn't particularly like it.]

If nothing else, it won't last too long. Just a few days.

Yeah, at least we've got that, huh? [ He crosses his arms. ] I'll-- I'll tell ya, it's already a lot better than all the Christmas stuff that was going on before. That was a lot to handle all at once like that.

It was pretty chaotic. [He nods in agreement.] Last Christmas was, too, but it was chaotic in a more dangerous way.

Maybe it was giving us a break this year or something. I don't know if Wonderland's at all sentient, but if it is, it has to do that kind of thing on purpose.

I-it's creepy to think about. Like if it knows what it's doing, that-- jeez, talk about making a lot of choices that are, that are just awful. It would be kinda lucky to get a break, but then everyone has to be all, "whoa, but when does it get terrible again?"

I think Wonderland is like that in a lot of ways. When you make friends here, for example, you spend a lot of time wondering when they're going to leave again and trying to prepare yourself for that loss.

Boy, that sounds-- that's a pretty rough situation, to be in. I guess I didn't really think about people disappearing to go home o-or whatever it is that happens. It's kinda sad, you know?

Yeah...but it's also good in a lot of cases. There are people who are better off here for some reason, but I think most people want or need to be at home more.

Huh. I guess so. I could-- I could kinda take it or leave it. Like I'd go home if I could, but i-it's not like I spend all my time there anyway. My grandpa and I have gotten stuck in places for months before. Y-y-you kinda learn to just roll with the punches after a while.

Yeah, that makes sense. It would probably be pretty stressful not to be able to.

Are you and your grandpa close? [It would suck to travel space with him if not...]

Uhhhhh. [ No one's ever asked him that before. ]

Wow. I-I mean, I guess we kinda are? He's like my friend. [ Even if he doesn't actually know everything about Rick. ] And we go around, just having adventures in space and all, just the two of us. And my sister, sometimes. I-- I think we're at least not not close.

Your parents don't mind? Or--actually, I suppose I should have asked first if your parents are around...

Oh, don't worry about it. They're around! Um. They're pretty much fine with it, you know? As long as I still make it to school and don't die or anything, anyway. I guess I can still get grounded from going out there sometimes.
