+ Trick or treat till the neighbors gonna die of fright! | OPEN +

Who: EVERYONE (if they want to live)
Where: EVERYWHERE (inside the mansion, knocking on doors)
When: 6/24 - 6/27
Rating: PG-13?
Summary: The Summerween Trickster has made his decree - Trick or treat...or die! This is a mingle log for Trick-or-Treating!
The Story:

On the morning of the 24th, everyone will find that the mansion was inexplicably decorated for Halloween...sort of. The idea behind the decorations is mostly the same, except that every jack-o-lantern is made out of a watermelon instead of a pumpkin. No, this is SUMMERWEEN.

For the first day it will be harmless enough, just a change in décor and a little spooky summer fun. However, by the second day there will be sightings of the Summerween Trickster, a creepy fellow made entirely out of unpopular loser candy, and he is not happy. In the entrance hall, there will be a giant jack-o-melon container with a counter and a count-down clock ticking away to the end of the event.

Your job, Wonderland, is to trick-or-treat for your lives. You have until the end of the event to deliver one million pieces of candy to the jack-o-melon before the end of the event, to appease the Summerween Trickster.

What was that? You'll just sit this out and wait for the event to end? I wouldn't do that if I were you. You see, the Summerween Trickster could be lurking around any corner. If he catches someone not fully embracing the spirit of Summerween (refusing to trick or treat, not wearing a costume, etc), they will not survive the experience. The Trickster will kill them and swallow them whole, making them part of his horrible loser candy body.

More details about trick or treating can be found here. This is a mingle post for trick-or-treating, if you'd rather use this than make a post! [Brackets] or prose are both welcome.

The-- [ Champion, which Hawke technically isn't, yet, of Kirkwall, which will probably tell Captain Rogers nothing. Say it differently, then. ] To a friend. A very good friend. And a very persuasive one, unfortunately.

[ He would say it frowning with reproach, but as long as Hawke isn't there to hear it comes more easily with a small smile. ]

If it doesn't take the offerings, then that is all the choice we will have left. [ More or less. Besides. ] Although I wonder if we will see the consequences at all. The creatures from the basement disappeared, as did the darkspawn tunnels. Perhaps this is just another exercise in biding our time.

[ As all too much here seems to be, evidently. ]

[ A friend. Well, doesn't it always come down to that? Steve has made a lot of stupid decisions for the sake of a friend, and some of those are still in recent memory for him. Refraining for the sake of a friend, on the other hand? He's not so good at that.

But he's also been in Wonderland long enough to know that sometimes the best thing to do is play by its rules. It's a good way to avoid death, anyway.

As Cullen speculates, Steve's quick to nod along. Since Cullen doesn't seem interested in releasing that mouse yet, Steve decides to move them down the hall so they can keep knocking on doors. ]

A lot of events are like that. You just have to wait them out, and if you do what you're "supposed" to then things work themselves out. [ He uses air quotes before realizing that Cullen might not understand what those indicate. Oh well. ]

[ Cullen follows, and knocks on the next door. He forgets to say the words. ]

Just like that?

[ That picture has been painted for him already, and he's tried to accept that people's efforts are simply at an impasse, that it is an opportunity they need to act. But how much more of this is he supposed to take as strategy rather than inertia? ]

No one ever fights, no one organises? We all just bide our time, and let Wonderland do what it will?

Trick or treat.

[ Steve gets the words out in time, so the door doesn't inflict another trick on them, spitting out candy instead. He bends down to pick up some of the pieces, depositing them into his bag. At least all of the candy is individually wrapped -- this really wouldn't be sanitary otherwise.

At Cullen's accusation, Steve's shoulders tighten and he turns sharply toward him, shaking his head. ]
I never said that. If there's something to fight, then we fight it. If we're attacked, we organize. But this is a little different...

[ The trickster is only going to come after them if they don't follow its request. ]

Why should we risk people getting hurt when we can just collect some candy and avoid that entirely? [ Strategically, this makes a lot more sense, at least as far as Steve's concerned. ]

[ Cullen shakes his head. ]

No, not for this event alone. Not for any of them, actually.

[ He can't call their strategy today sensible or sound or anything else that might suggest it was anything less than utterly ridiculous. But what they've chosen to do is... right, in avoiding more danger than necessary.

And yet it shouldn't need to be done at all, not when the root of the problem is hardly ever even addressed.
]

You said it yourself, you weather what it throws at you, but what about the time we are left to our own devices? What about organising against Wonderland itself?

[ Finding who or whatever is responsible, and confronting them. Bringing people home. ]

[ While they should be heading to the next door to continue their candy gathering, Steve's distracted by the conversation at hand. He gets where Cullen is coming from, he really does, but... ]

You want to be proactive instead of reactive. I get it. [ Steve lifts a hand to squeeze at the bridge of his nose and lets out a sigh. ] Technically there is a group of us that are interested in doing that. It's called the Resistance, but we've run into a lot of dead ends.

[ Still, maybe a new outlook on their predicament will help. Maybe Cullen will be able to think of some angle they haven't tried yet. ]

How do you fight an enemy you can't see or access? Even if it's the Queens that are responsible for all of this -- and I don't know that they are -- we can't actually reach them.

[ He nearly turns to the nearest door. But this has his attention now, instead. ]

You look for ways to make them visible, accessible. If that fails, then you look for ways to draw them out. Make them come to you, if they've barred all ways to come to them. [ A beat. ] In theory. I've only been here so long. I don't have a plan that offers guarantees. All I know is that any attempt offers a better chance than doing nothing.

[ The frustration itches underneath his skin. He knocks sharply on a door. Trick or treat, he says, aside, a trivial afterthought. ]

I'd like to know more about the Resistance. If there is a group that would oppose all this, then I'd like to offer it my support.

[ Any attempt offers a better chance than doing nothing -- well, that's the truth. Steve's frustrated in his own ways, mainly because they've tried all of these things and nothing has worked. On the other hand, Cullen represents someone who hasn't been trodden down by Wonderland just yet, at least not enough to have given up completely.

Not that Steve has either, but it's hard to know what avenue to try when each and every one leads to a dead end.

Still, he takes Cullen's determination and does what he can to feel it for himself. It's ridiculous that they're having a conversation like this while trick-or-treating, but it's fine, they can multitask. ]

Yeah, sure. It might help to have some new members to infuse it with life again. We don't talk about it over the network since it's harder to keep things secure on there. [ After collecting his candy, Steve inches a little closer to Cullen so that he can lower his voice. ] There's a hideout in the woods which only reveals itself when you have a password, but it's been a while since we've had any meetings there.
