[OPEN MINGLE] Or perhaps in Slytherin

Who: Slytherin House! (And friends and visitors, of course!)
Where: Slytherin Common Room, Quidditch Pitch, various places around Hogwarts
When: Duration of the event
Rating: G (will edit as necessary)
Summary: Slytherin open log!
The Story:

The Slytherin common room was a long, low underground room with rough stone walls and ceiling, from which round, greenish lamps were hanging on chains. A fire was crackling under an elaborately carved mantelpiece ahead of them, and several Slytherins were silhouetted around it in carved chairs.

The common room has changed, somewhat, from its historical description, thanks to the decorative powers of one Mettaton. Though it still extends beneath the lake and thus retains a greenish, aquatic cast, it's much more brightly lit, its cold, damp atmosphere replaced with dazzling MTT-brand warmth. Even the giant squid, occasionally peering in as it does its rounds of the lake, seems just a shade more glamorous inside such a charming space.

Students - and a ghost or two - can be found nestled within its confines, plotting mischief around the fire, studiously doing their homework (as good students do), or perhaps trading Chocolate Frog trading cards. Though Slytherin is not especially well-known for its wide-open, trusting nature, Slytherins are known for not snitching on each other; if a guest or two were to creep in for a while, then odds are, nobody saw anything.

You sound as if you speak from experience.

[Words carefully couched in between measured tones, a seeming nonchalance as they speak of things that might earn them dirty looks should anyone overhear. They could cast a sharp Muffliato out of spite, but...it does not appeal to them, they don't think. Let people overhear. Let people drop eaves and see the kid who finds monsters beautiful and look at them in disgust.

It will be easier to know who they should avoid, and who may wish them hurt.]

I do. [ the words are simple.

elena's lack of elaboration is neither deliberate nor evasive. some experiences you can't share with others, no matter how hard you try to explain them. she has a feeling they understand that: there is a price to pay when one feels connected to dark things, and they can't be turned away.
]

It's why I don't regret the house I ended up in.
determinedest: (* You give the Lost Soul a big smile.)

I don't either.

[But they could never regret ending up in the same house as Chara. Even if they think that sometimes, Mom and Dad might've been disappointed that they didn't end up in Hufflepuff.

But that sort of kindness must be genetic.]

But once Chara was in, I knew I would follow.

The same thing happened with Katerina. She's my sister, and she was sorted into Slytherin before I was. It made me feel like it was going to be okay. [ elena can't imagine herself anywhere else now; to think the sorting hat made a strong argument for ravenclaw.

she'd have made a good one, maybe, but this is where she belongs.
]
determinedest: (* Why would you ever climb the mountain?)

Did the Hat argue with you too?

["You could be Gryffindor," it had intoned drolly. "Or a Hufflepuff. Nothing wrong with that."

But they'd seen their sibling's eyes and they'd smiled, and said they knew exactly where it was they belonged.]

[ her brown eyes gleam; while it often means mischief is afoot, in this case, it's simply a secret is being shared. ]

Maybe. I wouldn't be surprised if it argued with a lot of us. Our true nature is never just one thing.

[ people are more complicated than that. ]
determinedest: (* But it didn't work.)

[personal profile] determinedest 2016-10-11 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. I'm not sure why the founders bothered with the Houses in the first place, or why we're all sticking with them.

[Frisk is many things - strongly opinionated about irrational divides is one of them.]

I mean, Salazar Slytherin wasn't really the greatest person. Why're we still putting him on a pedestal?

[ nose wrinkle. ]

What kind of name is Salazar, anyway? [ it sounds pretty lame, if you ask elena. ] My guess is some people really, really like tradition. They can't conceive of doing things in a new way.

[ it's destabilizing. ]

A shame. Because those Pureblood ideals sure do fly in the face of some pretty important people.

[Would Salazar "only the purest" Slytherin be terribly accepting of a Muggleborn child adopted by a pair of monsters?

Now, it's not like they knew the man personally. But their general feeling is no. No, he would not.]

[ elena grows quiet, unsure of how to proceed.

her parents embody those pureblood ideals, and while elena does not subscribe to them, she grew up surrounded by the very mentalities frisk is denouncing; a reminder her blood was special. elena's loyalties have been torn for so long, it's hard to remember she is basically orphaned.
]

I wish it were different. [ she shouldn't feel guilty. it's not her fault. but she does. ]
determinedest: (* Maybe with what little power you have)

[personal profile] determinedest 2016-10-16 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too.

[There's recognition of that struggle, and maybe sympathy there in response to it, but Frisk's loyalties have always remained with their own family, first and foremost. They speak firmly, however, without a shade of hesitation:]

One day they will be.

[Then,] Check.
