[OPEN MINGLE] Or perhaps in Slytherin
Who: Slytherin House! (And friends and visitors, of course!)
Where: Slytherin Common Room, Quidditch Pitch, various places around Hogwarts
When: Duration of the event
Rating: G (will edit as necessary)
Summary: Slytherin open log!
The Story:

The Slytherin common room was a long, low underground room with rough stone walls and ceiling, from which round, greenish lamps were hanging on chains. A fire was crackling under an elaborately carved mantelpiece ahead of them, and several Slytherins were silhouetted around it in carved chairs.
The common room has changed, somewhat, from its historical description, thanks to the decorative powers of one Mettaton. Though it still extends beneath the lake and thus retains a greenish, aquatic cast, it's much more brightly lit, its cold, damp atmosphere replaced with dazzling MTT-brand warmth. Even the giant squid, occasionally peering in as it does its rounds of the lake, seems just a shade more glamorous inside such a charming space.
Students - and a ghost or two - can be found nestled within its confines, plotting mischief around the fire, studiously doing their homework (as good students do), or perhaps trading Chocolate Frog trading cards. Though Slytherin is not especially well-known for its wide-open, trusting nature, Slytherins are known for not snitching on each other; if a guest or two were to creep in for a while, then odds are, nobody saw anything.

"About 7 years, give or take. I started on this halfway through my first year here. It started out as just an idle curiosity but now..."
He gestures to the stack. "Now it has become something greater."
no subject
"i... why didn't you.... tell me? ...until now, i mean."
no subject
Mettaton looks so pleased. He's done it. He's assured Napstablook's future, whatever way they want it.
"I didn't want to run the risk of getting your hopes up and then having them dashed because my theory and magic wasn't good enough."
no subject
Napstablook's voice is softer than usual but other than that their neutral, deadpan expression doesn't give away any emotion. How do you go about refusing something like this politely? How do you say no to something someone put so much of their heart into without breaking it in the process?
"thank you....um.... you know i'm.....
.....
....quite content with the way things are now, right?"
Seven years. He's been planning a way to get rid of them for seven years.
No, he doesn't mean it like that, he couldn't...
no subject
"Yes, I know you're content now but what if you're not content later? What if, a few years down the line, you feel like being trapped here isn't want you want? You'd have no choice but to accept your fate! I can't let my favorite cousin be bound to the laws of life and death if I can give them an out!"
This is all so casual to him. He has no idea how out of touch he really is.
no subject
They try to put it gently, try not to show emotion, but to no avail. A tear slides down their cheek.
"Mettaton..... i.....i really appreciate this but... i don't want to die...."
no subject
“Oh. But. I mean. You’re already dead. You haven’t been alive for 112 years. This wouldn’t kill you!”
Why are they crying?
“I’m sorry, did I upset you?”
no subject
"i.... i'm sorry i.... no it's not- not you but........"
How do they explain this? To someone who hasn't died?
"i....
i'm scared of it...... of....
of.... not existing......"
Mettaton please check your living privilege
They've mentioned this once or twice, of course, but this spell was supposed to make that safe. It is supposed to make it easy to move on. What is there to be afraid of then?
"Blooky, this spell would take care of you if you wanted to use it. Like I said, you don't have to, but there's nothing to be afraid of!"
He speaks as if he has any leg in the race whatsoever.
LITERLITERALLY
How do you explain this?
The ghost takes a slow, shaky breath, in and out, and then looks up at their cousin.
"when i died i- i had two choices. i could stop existing, die like- like a normal person, which no one knows what is actually like, or i could choose- choose to exist, which is.... well, some ghosts call it a hollow existence. you can't touch things or taste much things, and living was, well it was much better.
but i had spoken to ghosts before i died and, well..."
Another shaky breath.
"i decided to take the option i knew. the unknown is.... it's still too scary for me... i don't like being a ghost but i like that i'm still learning, i like that i still get to see what's happening in this world, i like-"
their voice breaks.
"i like that i g get to meet the people that came after me...."
no subject
"...oh."
He says. He opens his mouth to say something else.
"But... if you don't like being a ghost, isn't it still nice to know that there is another option if you wanted to take it?"
His brows furrow. Wait. Maybe that wasn't the best thing to say.
"I'm glad to have met you too, Blooky. Don't ever think that I am not grateful for that. You're one of the best things to ever happen to me."
For some reason, saying that feels like it resonates deeper than it does. Mettaton doesn't think about it that hard.
no subject
"don't get me wrong, i know there are ghosts who regret it.... i'm... just not one of them, sorry....
"but this took a lot of work.... show me how you figured this out...."
no subject
"Well you see, I deconstructed this spell with this magical theory..."
He's ready and willing to sit here with his cousin for however long it takes to explain his theory. After all, this sort of interaction could never have happened if they had chosen another path.
And honestly, his life would be empty without them.
