The Story:

Common Room
The common room is a circular room where Gryffindor students can relax after a long day of studying. It is full of squashy armchairs, tables, and a bulletin board where school notices, ads, lost posters, etc. can be posted. The common room is decorated in several shades of red, which is associated with the house.

There are many windows that look out onto the grounds of the school, and a large fireplace dominates one wall. The mantle of the fireplace is adorned with a portrait of a lion. The walls are decorated with scarlet tapestries that depict witches and wizards, but also various animals. There are also bookcases located in the room.

Dorms
The Gryffindor dormitories are also located in the Tower, with two doors leading off from the common room that open to spiral staircases. One of them leads to the girls' dormitory, the other to the boys'. The stairs to the girls' dormitory are enchanted to become a slide if any boy attempts to climb them, but not vice versa, since it was deemed that girls were more trustworthy than boys... (Look don't blame me it's canon)

[Lily might not be a prefect this year, but she has been one in the past, and she certainly respects how much effort Gryffindor's present prefects have been putting in. Iris, in particular, has been very generous with her time, and it's just after she appears to have finished up helping a younger housemate with one of their assignments that Lily approaches her near the fireplace in the common room, a cup of tea in hand.]

Sometimes I wonder how you make time to finish your own work, as often as I see you helping others.

[ iris groans with half-amusement. ]

I can't help it. Look at their little faces. [ they're so young and cute and in need. she glances to lily with a bright smile, though her eyes do look a bit tired at the corners. ] You remember what it's like to be a first year. Everything could be so intimidating.

Seems like it was ages ago now, but you're right, I do remember.

[It's been six years since then; six years since this became her world and she left her old one behind.]

It was overwhelming. I probably would have been lost if not for the aid of our housemates. Still, you look like you could afford to take an hour to yourself-- maybe two.

[ she gives a small laugh. ]

Okay, okay. You're right. I'll take a break. [ lily is sensible, and if she is suggesting it, then it must be so. a break does sound nice. so does a long, warm bath. iris does like to work even beyond her 'office' hours. maybe she really is more like joe west than she thought. ]

But only if you agree to keep me company. It's been a while since we had time to catch up.

[Her smile hitches wider, warming.]

Oh, I think I could manage that. [You're asking a lot here, Iris.] It has, hasn't it? We've both been so busy-- it's still relatively early in the year, but time feels like it's going by so quickly. Really, it's only just started to sink in that this is my last year here. It hasn't felt real, otherwise.

[ iris is so greedy that way...

she leads lily back to a comfortable couch by the fireplace, sinking comfortably into the leather. ] You're going to be sorely missed. [ not that they need to start talking about endings so soon in the school year, but it's so natural for it to be on their minds. ] I'm going to be asking a completely obvious question: are you nervous?

And I'll miss everyone here. The end of the year is a long way away, but-- I suppose it's not that long.

[Those months will have flown by before they know it. She exhales slowly in response to Iris' question; obvious or not, it's an important one, one that Lily has been giving quite a bit of consideration to the last few weeks.]

To be perfectly honest? Yes. Life is easier to quantify when you're in school; things are easily measured by grades. It won't be like that in the real wizarding world.

No, it won't.

[ iris acknowledges as much, because it's true. lily is a brave and capable young woman. iris respects her far too much to say something that isn't true in the hopes of comforting her. ] But I think good things can come out of uncertainty, too.

[ she pauses in thought. ] I love this school. And you're right that it's easier when everything is laid out for us. Our grades, our schedules, where we live, and who we eat with. But finding your own way and making all those decisions on your own can be really powerful.

[Putting a premium on honest is something they seem to have in common, and Lily nods in agreement, glad to have a level-headed friend to discuss this with-- the end of her time at Hogwarts will be bittersweet.]

It's exciting to think about, sad as I'll be to leave everyone behind. It's a whole different world out there-- a dangerous world, at that-- and that in itself can be overwhelming, like being a first year all over again. It's difficult not to be nervous, but it's mostly the good sort.

[ her hand settles on top of lily's, giving it a warm and gentle squeeze. the smile that curves on her lips matches the gesture. ] I think it'd be weird if it wasn't a little sad. It'll be sad to see you go. [ lily evans and her boys are such a staple at the school. ]

I'm glad you won't be alone. [ lily and james are sort of a combo deal, she imagines. ]

I'm sure I'll be back to visit, and we can always stay in touch after I've gone.

[There's a hopeful note in her voice, though she knows how it can be to feel so engrossed in your school life that correspondence with those on the outside is often left forgotten. It had been a point of contention between her and her sister, but--

Her housemates were her friends. She doesn't want to believe that they'll just fall out of each other's lives once she leaves school.

Her smile warms, face flushing only very slightly.]

You think James and I will make it together in the real world?

[ lily's hope aids her own, and while iris would love for that to be true, it's also not the priority.

the priority is to reassure lily that she is going to be fine. that she is going to be more than fine. she will thrive beyond the walls of their school, and she will be happy just as she deserves to be. iris west refuses to believe in any other alternative. ]

I have no doubt that you will. Trust me, my hunches have never been wrong.

[ when two people love each other that much, there isn't a storm they can't weather.

~~s-sob.~~ ]

That's right. How silly of me to forget.

[She laughs lightly, but Iris' determination and confidence are enough to offer her all the reassurance she needs.]

Iris West is always right. Nice to have someone like that in my corner. Convenient, really.

[But the greater sentiment behind Iris' reassurances was incredibly touching, more than she knew how to say.]

Exactly. Why have a Magic 8 ball when you've got Iris West?

[ iris is a muggle-born witch, just like lily, and sometimes it's nice to be able to reference certain things from a world that, while not wizarding, still has its own kind of magic. and for all of iris' teasing, there's a warmth and reassurance behind the words.

she means what she says. and she knows, from personal experience, how powerful love can be. ]

[There are some things about the Muggle world that Lily still looks back on fondly, and it's fantastic to have a friend who understands what it's like to come from that kind of background. Being a part of this world doesn't mean they have to completely forsake where they came from.]

Careful how invaluable you make yourself. I'll be firetalking you at all hours of the night once I leave here.

[ it's the way iris sees it. she's embraced this magical world of the impossible, but she could never forego her roots. they're both a part of her, and she refuses to choose: she doesn't think she has to. they've made it work so far, iris and joe. ]

Hey, I could probably use the practice. A friend of mine and I, we're considering a school newspaper.

Really?

[Lily practically lights up at the suggestion; that's something she's surprised that Hogwarts has gone this long without.]

I think that's a wonderful idea! If anyone can make it a success, it's you.
