Chara
She finally gets her bearings on her surroundings, and squints until she realizes what they look like. The hallway is almost an exact replica of the golden hallway on the way to Asgore's throne room- except the door that should be here is gone, and the windows are missing. Besides that, she can see some sort of box further down the hall, just out of her vision, and...
There's another body on the floor. With short brown hair and a green and yellow sweater. And in that moment, she's honestly just ready to lay back down on the floor and pretend to be dead.
Wonderland is actively tormenting her now, isn't it.
She walks over, reaches out to touch them, and stops. Frisk doesn't really like it. They probably don't either. So she takes a step back, clutching her hands together to keep from reaching for them, and tries to speak gently.]
Are, uhm, a-are you okay...?
no subject
Doesn't know why it's hearing it, though. Their groggy, fogged thought process doesn't go much further than "asleep" and "adult," and it reacts on pure reflex: they jolt away with an embarrassingly loud gasp, shuddering on the floor like they'd been poked with an invisible cattle prod. They clumsily start upright, scrabbling backwards an inch or two before their brain catches up and reminds them that, no, Alphys probably isn't interested in laying a finger on a sleeping Death Goblin.
Their already-rosy cheeks go redder, but they smile as if absolutely nothing out of the ordinary happened.]
Go away. Who let you in here?
[...Wherever "here" is. Is this... wait, is this New Home? No, it can't be. How did they get here?]
no subject
Uh... Wonderland? Maybe?? I just woke up here t-too.
[It doesn't look like Wonderland. Looks like New Home, but it's different.]
There was, uhm, a post by those card p-people a few days ago, so, uhm, maybe an event...? I don't know why, uhm. Us in particular, are here, though.
no subject
[They keep their smile fixed rigidly in place, but they lie back down.]
Very well. Leave me here to die.
[Doesn't know what kind of pointless shenanigans Wonderland expects it to put up with. Doesn't care. Maybe if it refuses to play, it will get eaten by a Grue.]
no subject
... I don't, uh, think that would be, uhm, v-very safe? We don't know what's in here.
[She really doesn't want to drag them down this hallway, but she has a pretty distinct feeling she shouldn't leave them here, either.]
no subject
[Reluctantly, it rises. Not in any mood to humour doomed notions like "teamwork" or "the power of friendship." Those belong to Frisk, not Chara. We all saw what happened when Chara fooled themselves into thinking they could ease into things like that.]
LV 8. HP to spare. You need a meatshield.
[That's all it is. Chara can provide a utilitarian purpose. That's what Alphys is interested in. Someone to keep her safe.
Doesn't matter. Don't care. Doesn't make a difference if they're still or in motion.]
Then let us proceed.
no subject
[Uuuuuugh there's no convincing them, is there? Sigh.]
Here, I can go in front. It's o-okay.
no subject
[They shrug it off, like they can shrug everything off. They had forgotten, for a while, how easy LV 8 made tuning things out. Seems like this event will be the sort where paring yourself down to nothing more than a function will be an efficient course of action, anyway. Chara doubts they were paired away like this just for fun.]
Something about this place seems somehow familiar, does it not?
no subject
Haha, and she just promised to put her back in full view of them. Can't go back on that one now! Fuck!]
It, uhm... l-looks like the hallway, outside Asgore's throne room. But the windows are gone, and, it goes on, uhm, much farther than it should. But uh, you p-probably know the castle better than I do.
[They did live there, after all. She just visited, before things got bad. Before everything went wrong.]
no subject
Not a place where two children wore Delta Rune robes that were far too large for them and pretended to be monarchs. Where Asriel sometimes offered to let them try on his crown, just until Mom and Dad got one made specially for them, but it always seemed so sacrilegious, so transgressive, so taboo, that it had never been accepted.
She never stood amid the silent pillars and told Asriel that the tinted glass here was like the color of a sunset, never tried and tried to simulate something that he would probably never get to really see, not unless... unless...
They wipe the thoughts from their head. Don't think about this anymore.]
That was a long time ago.
[They ignore it. Tune their surroundings out. Don't even hear the clack of lizard claws against the floor, the soft tap of shoes.
Not, at least, until the tile beneath their feet... changes. It's grey, even in the golden light of this room - perhaps that's just because the windows are gone, the light seems to come from somewhere other than stained glass. But it's arranged into a grid, a long stretching span of grey that also seems familiar, but not in the sense that any part of New Home is.]
Wait. This is different.
no subject
I don't... I don't r-remember this being here. What is th--
[Her voice immediately goes deadpan, and smacks herself on the forehead.]
Oh, not this, ohmygod. I never w-wanted to see this again.
[She shifts to put both her hands on her face.]
It's the t-tile puzzle I built for Papyrus. Ohmygod. Why.
no subject
Seriously? Now?
[They never believed in wasting time and mental energy on memorizing things that were not of use. They didn't have to bother with this puzzle, no matter the path they took. Just play dumb, and Papyrus won't activate it. Or accept, and it will mysteriously happen to all but solve itself - Chara had always wondered if this was the first evidence of Alphys cheering on the human from behind her many cameras, but it wasn't like they were ever going ask, right? Even when Mettaton trotted it out, they often didn't even bother to set foot on it. No point. Outcome was the same whether you solved it, failed, or didn't even attempt.
So...]
I don't remember the first thing about that absurd laundry list of rules this puzzle had. What do the tile colors mean again?
[It's like mentioning them jinxed it. There's a distinctive chime, and the tiles blip to life, winking into a random scattering of colours.
Great. Cool.]
no subject
Why. Why d-does this place hate us.
[She sighs again, studying the spread in front of her.]
Uhm, it was... pink are s-safe and red aren't, y-you just can't walk on them. Blue is safe unless you had a... smell, I think, because t-there were fish involved?? Green tiles don't d-do anything, the monster appearing was just a gimmick. Yellow makes you go backwards and p-purple forwards but there were flavors or something. Gosh why did I make this so complicated.
... D-Did you ever solve this?
no subject
[They don't believe in investing energy in inefficient or fruitless endeavours. Better ways to make use of their time. Better things to do. Somehow, though, they doubt that this time there's going to be a flawlessly straight pink path to safety this time.]
Um, there was soap involved somewhere in this. One of them was lemon-scented. Maybe that was the soap one? I could have sworn there were grapes, too. The piranhas like grapes but not lemons - no, wait, oranges? So that must be orange tiles. Did the orange tiles force you to move? Are they the soap or purple?
[Actually, wait, there's a more important question to ask here:]
Why did you ever design such a needlessly complicated and overworked puzzle in the first place?!
no subject
It was-- it was for Papyrus! Undyne was training him for, uhm, royal guard stuff, y-you know, and then she said I was a great puzzle maker, and y'know, I wanted to help Undyne so I said I'd make something!!! She said he designed all his own stuff, and I wanted to leave a good i-impression, so I just... added everything I thought of.
[Plus, she didn't actually expect it to be inflicted on someone.]
After that, Mettaton found the designs in my office later and w-wanted his own copy... I didn't think it would, uhm, ever actually be used.
[She fidgets, thinking on what Chara said and trying to remember the other bits.]
Okay, uhm, I think yellow was-- no, that's not the soap one, that was electricity. But the soap is uh, p-probably the lemons. The purple was backwards so maybe that's the grapes? Wait, were there orange tiles?
[fuck. She pulls out her communicator, starts taking notes.]
Okay. So there's p-pink which is always safe, red always not. The yellow electrocuted you so y-you have to go backwards. Purple was slippery so uh, I bet that's soap. If the soap is lemons... then you can't go through blue if you've b-been through purple? Do they have to be next to each other or does it wear off? Green doesn't do anything... I think the blue was water so it electrocutes you if it's too close to a yellow...
... This is awful.
