It was here that we turned the first vampires after us -- that we discovered we could that at all. The three we turned, Lucien, Tristan and Aurora had recently made their way to New Orleans.
[and everything kind of spiraled into disaster after that, especially because of that damn prophecy.]

is this some kind of parallel? rebekah's death led to elena becoming a vampire. is that why elena is here, in the remnants of the place where aurora met her maker? ] Where exactly did you turn them? I need you to remember, Rebekah. We might have to retrace your steps.

[And it's not exactly a pleasant story -- but Elena has seen the cruelties of the world herself, she'd probably not be surprised to hear of Aurora's suffering.]
Aurora, my brother's first real love [Tatia had been more Elijah's than Klaus', after all] had tried to kill herself by slitting her wrists. She was deeply unhappy and troubled, and wanted to be like us. I had healed her to try to save her life, to try to remind her what a gift that life was.
[She had envied Aurora then, because she had a choice. The option to live.]
That all happened in her bedroom, which means we'll need to find that first.

it's tragic, and so perhaps it should not be surprising the originals are involved in some way. elena has never actively wanted to end her life, despite the many kamikaze missions she's embarked on that might prove otherwise, but she does understand losing one's appetite for life. not knowing how to live anymore. ]
I didn't know Klaus had a first love. [ or ... love at all, really. not in the romantic sense.
elena sets off after rebekah, aware that she is the one that needs to lead right now, whether elena likes it or not. (she doesn't.) ]

Aurora De Martel. She jumped out a window after I had given her my blood, making her the first in my sireline. Their relationship was cut short because of Elijah's interference -- Aurora had admitted that she knew about our mother's death at Klaus' hands and Elijah was the first of us to use compulsion to make her turn on Klaus and reject him.
[The story ends in tragedy, everyone their family loves suffer for this. Rebekah knows this truth to be evident now more than other (it still hurts if she thinks on Marcel too long or too hard) and while she does not excuse the actions of the Trinity she gets why they targeted her family.
The Mikaelsons started it, they always do, that is their tragedy.]

elijah has always been the favored original, where elena is concerned. she thinks highly of him, despite the way they have betrayed each other. while she has no delusions as to what he is capable in the name of his family, it still surprises her. they really are cursed, aren't they? ]

He does now. But there was a prophecy that led us to believe the Trinity, or someone else, might take our family down one by one, even Nik knew this was not the time for us to become divided.

don't mind elena as her curiosity piques. she turns the information over in her head, calm and attentive though she looks on the outside. she does want to understand the story. she wants to understand why it's led them here and what kind of test it may be so they can return to wonderland as they know it.
but information itself can be power. ]
So — Aurora, along with Elijah and Klaus' first vampires, they were all in New Orleans trying to kill you?

[She is not telling Elena that Davina found a way to break the sirelines, or that Klaus' were in fact broken. She knows better than to trust the doppelganger with that kind of information.

But they did want to trap us, seal us away so they wouldn't have to worry about us, and to punish us for what Elijah had done -- he didn't just compel Aurora to reject my brother, he also forced the three of them to pretend to be us, to be decoys for our father.

that's why esther needed to link all of them. elena is so relieved, in retrospect, the plan didn't work. some of the people she loves most belong to klaus' sireline. jesus, elijah was not fucking around, tho. ] And now Wonderland is replicating the place where it all started.
[ elena says this musingly as they turn a corner, approaching aurora's bedroom now. ]

[ she can't help but wonder if their tentative truce is a part of it, though elena can't say how much is left after the last stunt. ]

[Rebekah isn't dumb enough to think anything about this place is a coincidence.
nor is she going to apologize, though she probably should. but it wouldn't be genuine, she doesn't feel bad for being ruthless in trying to find her sister.
the mikaelson bond is a viscous, toxic thing but none of them are willing to let go of it for very long.]

[ she can't imagine rebekah has made a lot of friends during her stay, but that's elena's mean girl side talking. she allows space for agreement, snarky commentary aside, and only stops walking when she reaches a hallway. ]

[Rebekah you have like...one friend at this point and predictably you're already beginning to project feelings onto him. Let's not get ahead of ourselves here.

elena doesn't realize she is without her powers just yet, and is perfectly aware that rebekah could snap her in half if she wanted to. there's only so much of the elastic band elena can push. so she nods, takes a deep breath, and steps into the room rebekah has singled out. ]
Here goes nothing.
[ except it's never nothing. once rebekah joins her inside, the door shuts solidly behind them. ]

rebekah grabs the doorknob and tries fruitfully to open it back up and she doesn't make any progress. if Elena is paying close enough attention she might notice Rebekah isn't using the sort of force she normally would -- mostly because she can't.]
We're stuck.
[she lets go of the door and wanders in. if they can figure out why they're in here they can get out, right?
there's some sort of letter on Aurora's desk but it's too dark to read it -- maybe there's something they can use as light?]

and elena understands the gravity of their situation, enough that she doesn't keep it to herself. ]
What do you mean, we're stuck? You're a vampire.
[ an original one at that. she should be able to break down that door. rebekah steps away and elena moves on up, grabbing the knob with both hands and using all her strength to try and open it. it's a comical sight, tbh.
speaking of light ... you smell that smoke? the curtains are kind of on fire now. ]

and now there's fire to add to this hot mess of a situation. lovely. fire isn't good for anyone but vampires in general are particular vulnerable to it it.
as they raise their voices the flames seem to grow higher and higher as well, as if responding to their hostility towards one another. if she could use her powers she'd would speed run them out of here to solve this problem but now they have to find an escape --

... but she does note the more they raise their voices, the more the flames grow higher, too. elena backs away from them, but fire is catching everywhere. she knows this sickening feeling. it wasn't that long ago she was trapped inside a ring of fire, waiting for rebekah's brother to kill her.
welp. they failed the first part of the test, and shutting up does not stop the fire from spreading.
she rushes over to the window. ] We're going to have to jump.

so elena makes it for her. she has a feeling that if she leaves rebekah behind, she won't like what she finds next.

elena uses the fact rebekah is ranting and thus distracted to flatten her hands on the original's back.
