The Story:


From Friday, March 9, through Friday, March 16, the gardens and grounds of the Mansion will be a sprawling a carnival. The masked, unspeaking vendors will be selling trinkets and running free game booths. Carnival rides, exhibits, and foods represent all of the various cultures of those currently residing in the Mansion.


Of particular note, and perhaps incongruously, everything is decorated with red hearts.

𝐈. 𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐎𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐆𝐀𝐌𝐄

[Like most things, Rocket doesn't entirely trust this, but it's one of those things where your options are "ignore it until it goes away" or "make the most of it," and as it's taking up a great deal of space and making a lot of noise, he finally just admits defeat and checks it out.

While some of the games and rides are things he's never seen before and seem lame in comparison, there are a few things that catch his eye- familiar things from street fairs on planets he's visited.

One of the shooting games is designed to look more "space age" with rifles that don't so much shoot air as very weak concentrated charges, designed to take down targets with a bit more oomph, but wouldn't give another person anything less than a small shock.

And he's pretty damn good at it too. He's amassed a collection of prizes that he doesn't particularly want or need, because he'd rather just hang out here knocking targets down with eagle-eyed precision and laughing about it.]


𝐈𝐈. 𝐅𝐎𝐎𝐃

[Rocket damn well knows better than to eat the food in Wonderland, but it keeps getting offered to him, and while he can pass on the funnel cake and popcorn, when they start offering delicacies from other planets... Well, when is the next time he's gonna get that specific kind of jerky you can only get from the street vendors on Knowhere. It looks terribly unpleasant, but Rocket is eating the hell out of the greenish colored meat sticks.]

Quite the skilled display.

[ peggy announces her spectatorship thusly. much as when they'd spoken on the network, there's nothing outwardly notable about her appearance -- a good blouse, a fastidious hairstyle, and she may in fact be wearing heels on the fair-grounds (a mistake she won't be making again on following days).

but, idle-like, she picks up one of his discarded prizes and tweaks its little plush nose. a rag-doll of sorts -- sweet, but ultimately dull. what's rather more interesting is the frenzy of shots that once again find their marks.

[He turns back to look at her and immediately chortles. He hasn't talked to her since Rip mentioned losing a bet to her, and he's bound to remember that forever. It's hilarious.] You ain't gonna be able to hustle me like you did Rip, lady. I happen to like not bein' bald in the face.

[mucked]

[ -- there's a moment, just a small one, where she's caught on the back foot. but it passes so quickly that all that's left is a sort of bright-eyed amusement. this is karmic retribution, peg realizes, for insisting that the man show his face on the network once the bet was fulfilled.

she clears her throat. ]

To say I hustled him, of course, is to say there was some cheat or swindle involved. It implies I took advantage. [ peggy reaches for one of the game's guns. ] I assure you -- Mister Hunter knew exactly what he was getting himself into.

[ a brief examination of the mechanism. ]

Your whiskers are quite safe.

Just making sure we both know what's what here. [He gives another couple of shots in rapid succession and, without looking up, continues.] Betcha haven't seen one like that, huh?

[mucked]

[ -- it's certainly more interesting than the plush toy. the game's gun, that is. peggy doesn't rush to shoot it, behaving instead as though she's far more interested in watching rocket handle the piece.

for the time being, at least. ]

In the interest of repairing my reputation, [ hustler, honestly! ] I would caution you against making that particular bet. I'm no stranger guns that fire 'blasts' rather than bullets.

[ the red skull's weapons, powered by the tesseract, had been hauntingly predictive in their force and mechanics. what had seemed impossible back then she now understands as futuristic. but rather than dredge up the dreary topic of infinity stones once again, peggy merely pats the side of her leather coat. the gesture implies she's carrying. she doesn't go so far as to pull out her holstered (and heavily modified) ppk. a ppk which now shoots red light, as far as she can tell, instead of bullets. ]

Given how strapped for ammunition the events sometimes leave us -- an upgrade seemed prudent.

[ that, and it was a rather thoughtful christmas gift from someone who knows the tech far far better than her. ]

Whoa, this is neat. I've never seen a gun like this. Can I try?

It's about time Wonderland got somethin' with a little style. [He hands over the gun and hops off the seat to observe what he imagines will be kinda funny.]

[Beatrice has never fired a gun in her own time, nevermind this futuristic thing. She holds it very carefully, puts her finger on the trigger, closes her eye, and squeezes.

She feels a little bit of kickback, but nothing major. She's alive, so everything went okay, right?

She opens her eyes, and sees she missed the target entirely, leaving a smoking crater in the booth itself.]

Uh... whoops.

[beatupgrass]

[Rocket observes the hole for a few seconds and then snorts. The snort turns into a full-fledged laugh until he's doubled over on the booth, cackling.]

HEY, it's not so bad considering I've never fired a gun before!

[Red's taking the amusements for face value. At the very least the opportunity to practice his shooting skills. It's been a while, but he still hits every target without fail. When he spies Rocket's pile of prizes out of the corner of his eye, he can't help his comment.]

Seems like I have some catching up to do.

[beatupgrass]

[The little laser makes a pzzt sound as it hits another target and Rocket turns his head slightly, the very picture of raccoonoid smugness.]

If you got a girlfriend, I'd be happy to spare you the humiliation of not bein' able to get one of the big cutesy prizes for her, and let you take 'em off my hands.

[And it is a lot of smug. Not that Red minds much, it is a carnival game after all.]

I'm almost concerned that this place wants us to be better at shooting.

[He takes a quick look at the gun before picking it up, and then picking off a few targets of his own.]

Given my experience? That's probably exactly what it wants. [Rocket stops firing enough to observe Red, canting his head.] Not bad. Ever used a laser rifle before?

No, but there's been a host of other weapons: revolvers, pistols, machine guns, and the occasional hellfire missile.

[He shoots another target.]

I like the accuracy.

Ew, that looks so gross.

[Kon floats over, matching Rocket's pace without actually coming close to the ground. Which is a little awkward since Rocket is pretty close to the ground himself.]

...can I try it?

[beatupgrass]

[Annd now there's a floating kid. Rocket shoves another piece of the jerky in his mouth before offering the little carton up.] Hope you got a strong stomach, kid. Street food from my section of the galaxy ain't for the faint of heart.

[It's impossible to even describe the taste, since no flavorings like that exist on Earth. It's bizarre, but, you know, it doesn't taste as bad as it looks.]

[cloned]

[Kon scoffs.] I can handle it.

[He snags a piece and chews it thoughtfully.]

Huh. It's okay. Not nearly as bad as you were making it out to be.

[beatupgrass]

Tell me that later when you're warding off the heartburn and nausea.

[It's like pizza, only worse.]

[cloned]

I'm Kryptonian. Pretty sure I'm immune as long as there's a yellow sun.

[wynonna has seen a lot of different sorts of weapons in her time -- but this was a new one and it definitely caught her eye as her face fills up with childlike delight.]

Holy shitballs that is awesome.

[beatupgrass]

[Rocket actually cackles without taking his eyes off the targets. He fires off a couple more rounds, eliminating two more targets.] What? This? Lady, this is a kid's toy.

Really? Cause I've seen a lot of guns, both real and toys, and that's a new one for me.

[she definitely wants to give it a try though, it looks awesome.]

It don't do actual damage. Now a big one? That'll rip a hole in somebody. And I build those ones for fun.
