nascensibility: I expected something better (frankly I'm shocked)

[Crowley - the other, less argumentative Crowley - while not an objectionable character, is certainly not close enough to her to understand the importance of her memory. The intrusion is still one that bothers her on a quiet, unspoken level, as the uninvited company has her standing and smoothing her skirt self-consciously when he coughs.]

Crowley.

[Her gaze darts to the bed briefly, where Rick is grinning and Alex's tiny hand is tightly wrapped around one of her husband's fingers.]

...I do. He's...eight years old, now.

You miss him.

[ He doesn't get it, not really. The closest he can come is missing Kevin, because he certainly doesn't miss Gavin, the great, big failure, even if he's had a sentimental feeling for him here or there.

If he's honest, Crowley's almost jealous of people who are allowed to have this. Her son's the same age he was when his mother left him and he has no doubt that his mother would never see anything like this as her happiest memory. Fergus had never been more than a thorn in her side or a tool to be used.

His expression softens into something rare and far more human.
]

I hope Wonderland will see to send you home to him.
nascensibility: whose baby chicks have learned to fly (I feel like a proud mama)

[She misses him terribly.

Upon her return to Wonderland she had spoken with Mark Meltzer, who lost his daughter to kidnappers and had sojourned after them to recover her. At the time she had asked him if missing Cindy got any easier as time wore on, if that void inside you ever felt less dark, less forbidding. He told her that it didn't.

Months later Mark came back to Wonderland after an involuntary trip away. He had found Cindy, but she wasn't the same and neither was he.
]

I hope so, as well.

[Things have been so bleak for the past week after her row with Will, and for some time it's been getting harder to hope for a return.]

I was a father once, myself.

[ A bad one, sure, but he'd sort of been set up to fail, hadn't he? He'd had no make role models and no good parental role models at all. He'd like to think saving Gavin had made up for some of it, but he doubts it really fixed all that much. Now, his son is out there on his own in the wrong time and possibly mucking up history by not being there to die. ]

When you leave here, you'll go back to where you were taken from. You're not missing anything.
nascensibility: okay maybe just a little (don't cry don't cry)

[Unaware that demons had the capacity or wherewithal for fatherhood, her surprise registers visually, a sharp jerk and a curious look, heavy with pity. Lacking one's child is-

...difficult.
]

I know that.

[Evelyn casts a guilty look back at the bed, a place of warmth and stability and trust, all of which she feels have been ripped out from under her. It is strange, standing on the precipice again. The wind is strong there, and so loud she can hardly hear.

She wants to fall.
]

It's hard to keep reminding myself. Sometimes I think I'm never going home.
goesdown: (And that's what baby's been reduced to)

Have you never left Wonderland once you came here?

[ Crowley's gone home several times, himself, but he's noticed that there are certainly some people who seem to never go home. Certainly, this is the first time Blake's disappeared in Crowley's memory and they've both been here nearly two years. ]

I don't think anyone stays here forever, save for Alice, and I'm not convinced she didn't come from this place to begin with. You'll go home again.

[ He says it with far more authority than he has a right to a really, far more than he wants, because he's much happier staying here or at least thinking he'll always come back. ]
nascensibility: it's called "I Hate You, Please Die" (this next song goes out to you)

...I've gone home twice, actually,

[she informs him, arms folded over her chest, the exact date of her most recent departure-and-return burned into the inside of her skull. It's been too long. Far too long. Going on four years now it's difficult to remain as optimistic as she once was.]

The last time was almost two years ago. I came back April 2nd.

[A beat.]

I've seen a lot people come and go, Crowley. Sometimes it's the same face with different memories. Sometimes they're new, sometimes they don't stay very long. Sometimes they stay long enough for me to get to know them, and then they leave. They always leave.

Then you know that eventually you'll go home, too.

[ He smiles, bittersweet. Good news for her, but bad news for him. Even before Wonderland, Crowley's lived a life of people walking away from him. Wonderland's stolen people away and the idea that he could leave and forget this place or that it could take Blake and never bring him back makes Crowley's blood boil. ]

You won't miss his life.
nascensibility: tell it to the cleaning lady on Monday (I dislike you capisce)

You make it sound so pretty,

[she huffs a laugh, trying to reel in her abject pessimism. It isn't like her.

Things have been hard.
]

He won't grow older without me and I don't mean to sound like a stick in the mud. A lot of people here are very lucky to have family and friends, and I'm...I'm happy for them.

[Evelyn's gaze drifts back to the bed to watch the scene, because when will she ever be so lucky? When will it be more than a dream or a vision, an event to torment her with what she doesn't have? She has taken up Mark's Meltzer's mantle: keeper of the books, the records, a steadfast member of the Wonderland welcome-wagon.

Perhaps one day she'll disappear too, and no one will remember her.
]
goesdown: (What can one do when one is widower)

[ Crowley shrugs. He knows that he's good with words. It's not a boast, in his eyes, because it's always been his greatest asset. Every once in a while, he actually uses it to help someone other than himself. ]

Evelyn, you don't sound like a stick in the mud. You sound like a mother. A good one.

[ Not like Crowley's at all. Over the years since her abrupt departure from his life, he's wondered if she ever even thought of him again. He doubts very much that she has, though. When he sees the way Evelyn looks at a mere memory, it's nothing like the way his mother used to look at him.

Fergus had been a burden. This child is a blessing in his mother's eyes.
]
nascensibility: looks like you're starring in an Albanian remake of the Cosby Show (nice sweater nerd)

[Arms wrapped around herself she can't bring herself to disagree. Her own parents were lovely people but exceptionally neglectful in the sense that dropping their children off with the governess and at boarding schools, academies...it was easier than taking them along, much of the time. A baby doesn't belong on a dig, but that certainly hasn't stopped her and Rick from bringing Alex along until he could hold a trowel on his own.]

He's a wonderful artist. I'm not, so he usually...we let him do the sketches while we work in situ.

[Alex is a dashed-good architect in the making, too, but this isn't the appropriate juncture to gush. It'll only hurt more when the event ends. Turning back to Crowley she lends him a sympathetic glance.]

...Tell me about your children?
goesdown: (Can I have a nature change?)

Just the one. Gavin.

[ He doesn't like this topic, but he also doesn't think that there's harm in it and he's just seen something fairly intimate from her life, hasn't he? ]

I can admit that I wasn't much of a father, but I never had anyone to be a good example in that regard. I did save him from dying in the end, though. He was supposed to board a ship that went down and I may have... undone it. He's out there somewhere, even if he is a bit displaced in time.

[ Crowley isn't really sure if he's helped the little bastard or damned him, but he would know if Gavin had died. He's at least paid attention for that. ]
