She wanted me to stay in the North, I should have listened.

[ catelyn stark had tried to ask her, did she not? but sansa was young and stupid and enamored with the beauty of the south, with the handsomeness of prince joffrey, with the silks of the queens' dresses, with the idea of becoming a queen. ]

If I had stayed with her, mayhaps none of this would happen. I was stupid, I thought life was beautiful and sweet but they are not.

[ in real life, monsters are handsome and monsters can win ]

I haven't seen her since I was one-and-ten.

[It's difficult to look at someone so young and see that she's so full of regret, but how could she be anything else, when she's lost most of her family?

Still, blaming herself for how things turned out -- for other people's crimes -- won't do her any good. Steve may not be good at taking that advice himself, but he can definitely give it.]

You can't think like that. [He takes a seat next to her while making sure that there's still some space between them so she doesn't feel crowded.]

You can spend all of your life dwelling on what-ifs, but hey, things might have turned out worse if you'd stayed. There's no way of really knowing that kind of thing.

[And brooding on it won't change the facts, either.]

Her death isn't your fault, Sansa. It's the fault of the people who killed her.

[ when her lord father enters the room, sansa looks at him before tearing her eyes from him towards steve. she reminds herself that he is there, not something between a memory and a dream.

she is grateful to wonderland for giving her the chance to see them and at the same time, she hates it. ]

They all betrayed her and my brother. I hope that you could see him.

[ here is the only place where he might. ]

Robb, he was King in the North. He was brave and good and just.

[ like you, she wants to say. ]

You are also that. Brave and good and just.

[ and those traits seem to lead people to sad ends. ]

I do not want you harmed.

[Someone else enters the room. Another part of the memory, it seems, but Sansa won't even look at the man in question, like she can't bear to.

Steve can, though, and judging from the man's age and his overall demeanor, he must be Sansa's father. Another family member she lost.

It occurs to Steve then, that Sansa is an orphan.

But when she expresses her worries, that what will happen to her brother and the rest of her family will also happen to Steve, he's quick to shake his head.]

Listen, I'm... built a lot sturdier than most people. It takes a lot to actually hurt me, and even if I do get hurt, I heal pretty quick. [She may not believe it since she hasn't seen it with her own eyes, but it's the truth.]

You don't need to work yourself up worrying about me. Really.

They said so of Robb.

[ quietly. she looks at him with wide, worrying eyes. a child, sansa stark is, by age. three-and-ten and a maiden flowered and married but to so many despite her slender hips and her height, she is but a child.

she doesn't feel so, however. she feels as if she had lived a hundred years and - ]

they called him the Young Wolf, they said he cannot lose, he was glorified and full of victories and strong but they betrayed him on the Twins.

[ and she places her hand over his heart. ]

It is this that you must protect most of all.

[Sansa's had her heart broken worse than most, because she had been given hope. She'd been told that it would all work out, that her brother would be the valiant hero and win the war and save her, and it hadn't happened that way. Sometimes the world doesn't let itself play out the way it would in a storybook.

It means that no matter what Steve says, she won't stop worrying for him. She'll continue to think that something is going to go wrong, and that he's going to end up dead. Even if death isn't permanent here, there are other things that this place could do to him.

When Sansa's hand presses over his chest, Steve grabs for it and squeezes it between his own.]

I crashed a... [She won't know what a plane is, he realizes, so he starts over.] I got into a bad accident once. For years everyone thought I was dead, but somehow my body held out.

[Even now, people worry that he's brittle somehow. Sansa's scared for him, Bucky thinks he's going to hurt him or worse, and Steve doesn't know how to prove to them that he's made of stronger stuff now.]

I'll do everything in my power to make sure you're not left alone, all right? [They all have to make it home someday, Steve knows, but Sansa may prefer it here. She's not hunted here the way she is back home.]

[ wonderland's horrors are naught when compared to westeros. mayhaps because sansa is so well known and sought after in her realm, that her hand in marriage is worth as much to one as her dead body does to another.

she has enemies in wonderland, of that she has no doubt. there are those here who will betray her in a moment's notice but there are those who will not.

in westeros she has only one friend, only her petyr. here, she is under the protection of the targaryen queen and under his and bucky's and surely is is better.

but what can she do for them? nothing. and sansa has learned all her lessons in westeros, one cannot get something without offering something in return. but for now, they do not ask and she tries not to question herself, either.

her lady mother walks across the room, her cape is held together by a silver pin shaped as the head of a direwolf.

with an effort, sansa looks away from her and back to her company in present, her hand held between his and she bends her head to press a kiss onto it. ]

Would that we would not have such tests for your strengths anymore.

[ and thank you, she wants to say but fears her voice will break around the words if she tries. ]

[It's something that they can hope for, that Steve won't be put through the wringer here the way that he has back home. On the other hand, Wonderland has already proved what it's capable of, even going so far as to take his memories for a few days -- or more recently, to display them for everyone to see.

Steve glances up as Sansa's mother crosses the room, although Sansa herself doesn't seem capable of looking anymore. She's probably looked long enough already, and if having him here to focus on helps her, then his job is done, at least.

He's not entirely prepared for the kiss, but it's an innocent gesture, some show of gratitude, and Steve smiles softly in response.]

Even if we do, I'm built to last.

[He tries to stand then, aiming to have Sansa move with him, to budge from the place she's probably been glued to for too long.]

C'mon, let's get you some food.
