"Tell me about it," he sighs.

He had to learn that one the hard way, after all. For a while there he thought he was seriously too big to fail, but he found out pretty quickly that no one is too big to fail. Not even him.

"I don't really want the kingdom back though," he adds. "I just...I want to fix what I've done, but I'm pretty sure it's screwed up beyond all recognition. I dunno if it can be fixed."

What he does know is that he definitely doesn't want that power again. He doesn't trust himself not to let the whole thing go to his head again, and worries that he'd start abusing it as soon as he was comfortably on top again. He's rather have nothing.

Something finally sinks in though and he pauses, giving Crowley a look that's somewhere belief disbelief and extremely alarmed.

"Wait. You're...literally the King of Hell?"

Crowley would like to give him a heartfelt pep talk, but he's already at maximum levels of positive thought and encouraging others here. He's not even particularly invested in what they're talking about beyond a passing curiosity, so when he's handed a chance to talk about himself, of course he's going to take it!

"I am literally the King of Hell." He smiles at the Once-ler, indulgent and full of mirth. "I've made no secret of the fact that I'm a demon."

Of course he hasn't brought it up as much lately, settling nicely into a rhythm where enough people here know him that he doesn't have to be forthcoming just to preempt one Dean Winchester warning people not to talk to him. Still, there's no point in keeping a secret something that only makes him look worse if he isn't honest. Better an honest demon than a lying fake human, right?

"At least I don't think I have."
thneedifestdestiny: Some Nights (Intro) - fun. (Into changing - whatever!)

He's not impressed, but mostly because he feels kind of dumb for not remembering something that was apparently common knowledge.

"Yeah, well. Last time I saw you, neither of us were exactly ourselves," he points out. Neither of them were CEOs or demons or whatnot - they were rival tailors, and ordinary humans at the time.

That doesn't explain why he wouldn't remember from their previous encounter before that, but that's more embarrassing to admit. For the Once-ler, it was years ago and back when he was happy to wallow in denial. It's entirely possible that Crowley told him to his face and he thought he was joking.

"But uh." What can he even say to that? "...That's one heck of a job title."

Crowley practically preens. Of all the guilt and shame and mistakes in his life, his climb to the top of the demon pile is something he's very proud of.

"It's one heck of a job." He smirks. "Already lost it once and got it back again."

He claps the Once-ler on the shoulder. "You can come back from losing everything as long as you're not dead."

It's a philosophy Crowley has to believe, because he's lost everything a few times now.

That earns Crowley a bit of a look, because what can someone possibly do that's bad enough that they'd get overthrown as king of hell? But, he's also not expecting a friendly clap on the shoulder, so he turns off that attitude pretty quick.

"Uh...thanks, I think." He's not entirely sure whether advice from a demon is advice he wants, but hey - he's not wrong. He cracks a smile and offers an awkward laugh. "Can't come back from much of anything if you're dead, really."

Still...he doesn't know if he really wants to come back from that. He doesn't trust himself with that kind of power, and he doesn't trust that it wouldn't go to his head again.

"Gotta admit though," he adds, as an afterthought, "it's definitely way easier in a place where no one really cares what you did."

"Tell me about it. Even having a good number of people who do care here, there's still enough who don't."

He thinks of all the people who've come and gone, even the ones like Martha who were apprehensive but ultimately gave him a chance or helped him when he was in need. Wonderland's shown him compassion that his life in his own world never did in life or in death.

"This place has a lot to offer people like us."

He can't argue that at all. Even the tiny amount of protest he wants to let out over people like us dies in his throat. It would suggest he thinks he's better than a demon and, well, is he? Probably not.

But Crowley's absolutely right.

"It really does," he says. "It's pretty great for second chances. ...I just hope I can make the most of it."

Who knows if he can though? His mistakes might be completely beyond fixing now.
