Transcending limitations

Summary: Doctor Whale doing science things and experimenting on people
The Story: He was always seeking answers, always wanting to push the limits. All this time in Wonderland and he never tried to really push those limits. But something about this particular weekend made him forego any restraint. He wasn't going to stop until he found answers.

If people got hurt in the process, he did happen to have Adam's healing blood. But before he got ahead of himself, he needed to find his subjects... Hopefully Luke wasn't too squemish, because Whale would need his assistant.

"But you're able to move your prosthetic limbs in the same way you move your real ones," Whale insisted. "They are connected to your body enough to read the signals your brain sends them. If they were damaged, would you feel pain?"

Ed bites his lip. He isn't sure he wants to answer this. What if Whale decides to test things to find out if what Ed said was true?

[jolting]

He waited patiently. When it became clear that Ed wasn't inclined to answer the question, Whale once again readied the taser. "I could find out, you know," he reminded the boy. "Or you can just answer the question."

"It depends. My mechanic makes them with fail-safes to prevent that kind of feedback if they get busted." Ed's just kind of looking at the ceiling now; occasionally testing the straps to see how sturdy they were and if he could loosen them with enough work.

[jolting]

It was a shame Edward refused to be cooperative, forcing Whale to threaten him like that. They were both scientists; why couldn't Edward appreciate Whale's thirst for knowledge?

"If your mechanic were to come to Wonderland, could they build a new limb?" he asked.

Whale's method's leaves rather a lot to be desired in Ed's opinion. "Yeah, given the right tools."

And Ed's planning on warning Winry about Whale if she ever shows up. He's feeling a bit paranoid about what Whale might do to her.

[jolting]

Whale's eyes strayed to his hand, his fingers flexing. His arm was reattached by magic... If he were to trade it for an automail arm, it would be rejecting magic in favor of science. It would hurt like hell but maybe worth it in the end. Of course, Edward's mechanic would have to come to Wonderland first.

"I think I've learned all you're going to teach me," he decided. "I'll let you go now."

Ed gives him a suspicious look. "That's it? All that for stuff you could have just asked me without tying me down and threatening me?!"

[jolting]

He arched an eyebrow. "You know, Edward, you're absolutely right. Let's keep going then, shall we?" He smiled, rummaging through his things for a certain vial of blood.

"You have a burn mark from the taser. How about I fix that for you?"

[seekinghome]

Fuck. Fuckfuckfuck. Ed starts struggling to get loose, finding it hard to stay calm even with the sedative. "What are you planning to do?"

[jolting]

"I'm going to give you an injection of this blood," Whale told him calmly, filling a needle with the blood as he spoke. "It's said to have healing properties... I haven't tested it yet, so I'm not sure if it will actually work. But now seems like an opportune time to try."

He moved forward, needle at the ready for an injection. "Unless you want me to stab you in an unfortunate place, I suggest you hold still."

Ed forces himself to stop moving, giving him a resentful glare.

"I. Hate. Needles," he snarls. He watches it warily, pretty sure that letting Whale inject him with random substances that he doesn't know what will actually do to him wasn't actually a good idea.

[jolting]

"I don't believe you need to be conscious for the blood to have an effect," Whale said. "Though a boy of your age should be able to stand a small prick on the arm."

[seekinghome]

Ed transfers his glare to Whale. "Being knocked out once was more than enough."

[jolting]

"Then I suggest you hold still." There was no empathy in his tone at all. He reached to grab Edward's flesh arm for the injection. Honestly, all this fuss over a little needle when Whale could do so much worse to the boy if he chose.

Ed grits his teeth as Whale grabs his arm, not looking forwards to this. "Aren't blood types supposed to be the same when you're sticking blood in someone?"

[jolting]

"I guess we'll find out," Whale concluded. And with that, he pushed the blood through Edward's system. He had no idea how long it was supposed to take before it began working. If it was even going to work at all. If Adam was to be believed, his blood could heal anyone of anything. So an injection like this should heal the burn marks left from the taser.

Whale focused on the marks, watching for a change. Another triumph of science over magic if it worked. And of course it did, the burns fading and the wound closing as if it never existed.

"Incredible," he breathed out.

Ed gritted his teeth as he felt it work, realizing this was probably similar to how Greed felt when his healing kicked in. "Are you finished?"

He's rather hoping that Whale didn't decide to hurt him further to see if the blood would fix that as well.

[jolting]

It would be a waste to use the blood again when it already proved to work. Whale only had the one sample, and he needed to save some of it for actual healing if possible.

Truthfully he wanted to examine those automail limbs at greater length, but he didn't want to render Edward immobile. He did tap his knuckles on Edward's automail knee just to hear the metallic sound it made.

"An incredible construct. If only there was someone like your mechanic in Storybrooke."

"Why, so you can harass her too?" Ed watches him, wondering when he gets to get loose. Right now, he's torn between hitting Whale a lot and getting away.

[jolting]

"That's my business," Whale replied vaguely. He could tell from Edward's expression that were he to release the boy, he would get a punch in the face at the very least. Not an action he wanted repeated. How, then, to release Edward?

"Are you familiar with deals, Edward? They're a popular transaction where I come from."

[seekinghome]

It's probably just as well that Ed doesn't have laser vision, otherwise, he'd be a pile of ashes. "What do you want?"

[jolting]

"I want to release you without suffering injury," Whale answered. "I've done what I can without damaging your automail, and feel satisfied in my experiment. Admittedly there isn't much I can offer you in return, but we are both scientists. I'm sure you can come up with an adequate price."

[seekinghome]

"You should have thought of that before you decided to experiment on me," Ed points out snippishly.

[jolting]

"I hardly did anything to you at all." There was a chilling lack of compassion in Whale's voice. As if he didn't even care that his methods were less than orthodox. "I could have done much worse, but I'm giving you the chance to walk away from this unscathed."
