A secondary attack on the popcorn was put off. For the moment.
The frown coming to Jack's face told of his thoughts on someone dropping off their nephew off at a school they had never been to before with a pack of strangers. Things like that weren't supposed to happen, even in the world of a sixteen year old Jack Harkness. It smoothed quickly into a grin meant to put the poor boy at ease as much as he could.
"Well, you met me, and that's a start. You can stay in my room. There's an empty bed. I can show you where stuff is and introduce you to others. It's not that bad, yeah?"
Jack could be a shallow ass, which most people labeled him at and stopped there, but he didn't like petty injustices he could correct anymore than the adult version did.
"I bet most of them have not met a real Welshman!"
Just a little smile?

Apparently he could. Meeting Jack-probably-not-captain-of-anything Harkness was like being befriended by an unusually attractive tornado. So that was charisma. Ianto didn't think it was fair, considering he thought he might have been behind the door when they'd passed it out.
He pushed the popcorn bowl back in Jack's direction. He still wasn't sure what to say, but when Jack was offering to let him move in, he could at least afford to share his snack food.
"It's not that bad."
It really wasn't. He was surprised to realize he was considering the offer anyway. Maybe he could make friends.

He didn't, but Jack could lie with the best of them. No one should be dropped off in a strange place like a puppy at the pound. Who did that? It was his mission not to let Ianto get lost and spend his time being alone. That was a word he hated. Alone. It even sounded ugly. Since Jack didn't sleep due to a medical condition unless heavily drugged, his bed was an easy thing to give up. Ianto could sleep there until the guests had to leave the school.
And he had popcorn that he was now willing to share.
"No, it's not! I bet you would like Ned. He makes some of the most delicious pies ever. Then there's Will. He's sort of odd and shy, but if you like dogs, he'll get along with you. Avoid the Lecter twins. They're weird. Oh, and Bruce! You have to meet him. I bet he could find Wales on the map."
Jack may not be the best student. Brilliant according to his teachers but too lazy to get much done. None of that changed the heartening grin he gave Ianto.
"You'll be fine. I promise! Crowley, Becky and all of the others will be around too."
If that look of near-despair on the stranger's face faded, that would be enough for Jack. No one should ever look that lost and alone. Not while he was around.

"Well if he can find Wales on the map he'll be doing better than I do with half of the States."
Somehow he wasn't surprised at the long list of friends Jack was rattling off. Friends, and two weird people to avoid, which he'd normally think of as a sign of someone Ianto might like. From a guy as friendly as Jack, though, he might take "weird" more seriously.
He cleared his throat. "All right, I guess."
And if he woke up with marker on his face or one hand in warm water, he probably deserved it for caving this fast.

Well, with that all settled, that left only one thing for them to do, right? Right! At least in the mind of 'Captain' Jack Harkness.
"Let's dance. Come on. Get to show you off to everyone."
Setting aside his glass of punch (nasty stuff that in his opinon) he held out a hand for Ianto.

He wasn't sure how he'd missed that. It probably had something to do with the fact that no one flirted with him, and besides, Jack was a guy, and Ianto didn't really go for guys like that, usually, not that there was anything wrong with it --
Where had he been going with that?
Nowhere, he admitted to himself. In circles. He eyed Jack's offered hand the way he'd eye a large, toothy dog of uncertain friendliness.
There was an easy way to get out of this, which was to say he wasn't interested. The only problem was that Ianto wasn't sure it was true.
"I can't dance," he said instead.
