The one emotion that lingers even after that initial flood of them is worry, and Steve can only imagine that's coming from Pepper. Who she's worried for doesn't really matter, it's enough to make Steve's stomach ball up in a way he's all too familiar with. He lets out a breath when she reassures him, although her words don't necessarily make him feel better.

He rubs at the side of his neck and looks Pepper over. "That bad, huh?" Tony's always made it his business to come across as larger than life, as a diva like he'd once said. But Steve can see how under all that, he's brittle, unprepared for all of the craziness that he tossed himself into. Coulson's death alone had been enough to shake him, and that's only one reminder that he really isn't a soldier.

Still, watching Tony as he talks to a Pepper that isn't there, Steve can see the fondness in his expression. If he's got someone like Pepper looking out for him, then Tony will turn out just fine. Steve's almost sure of that.

He returns his attention to Pepper. "Well, I guess we solved that mystery. We can clear out of here, if you want. Or I can leave you to it." It might be that Pepper needs some more time with Tony, even if she seems to have a lot of conflicting feelings about this memory. Steve really hadn't meant to intrude in the first place.

"I'm quite sentimental under the right circumstances and with the right demon." No need to ask who makes her sentimental out of any of them. There's only one smarmy demon that could ever qualify. "Ruby served her purpose, but she was never a figure in my circle or allegiance." That had been the point, after all. Someone who she knew was loyal, but did not outwardly show it. Someone not in her employ.

"I don't need to kiss your ass, Meg. My expressions of admiration are due to skill alone. It's not as though it's gaining me anything. I make my own way."

[personal profile] first_demon 2015-03-12 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It strikes a nerve, as he intended. Lucifer's rejection of her and clear use of her as a tool was both frustrating and painful. He abandoned her and hid his distaste for her kind under sweet, charming words. Did he really love her? No, that was becoming more and more clear. And for Castiel to know this, it was a bitter blow.

"Likely in the same place it left you. How is your father? Gone, much like mine." She rolled her eyes. "Hardly a wonder you rebelled given your wonderful family life. Archangels fighting amongst themselves, hardly any attention for their other siblings."

Anything having to do with you is my type. [She grinned at him, giving him a sultry wink.

His comment causing her to laugh.]

How exactly will you get me to leave, Sam? By force?

"Mine too." Though his list isn't particularly long or full of promise, there are still things he needs to see with his own eyes, even if they're long gone by now. He turns a little, waiting on her to fall into step. He doesn't miss the way her face lights up.

"It's a big company where I'm from. They manufactured weapons, mostly. That's Howard Stark up stage with the ladies and the flying car." He thinks the name makes it pretty obvious how Stark and his company are related. He waits until the bright red car hovers and then crashes back down onto the stage, watching Lydia more than he's watching the show. There was a time when he felt the same way. He's not an inventor, but that doesn't mean he can't appreciate seeing a few things that seem impossible. Just as much as the other memories, it's been good to get back a sense of wonder.

"You like this kind of thing?"

[It's not as if Castiel wants to run out of those good times, no. As it is, humans are so short-lived, which means that he doesn't actually have much time with them, relatively speaking. If Dean and Sam happen to make it to an older age, which is unlikely given their line of work, then an illness of some kind will eventually put them in the ground.

Castiel prefers not to think about that.

The point is, he doesn't intend to burn any bridges with the Winchesters, not when their time together is already so limited. Wonderland allows them to spend time together without either Sam or Dean aging, and for that at least Castiel is grateful.

He smiles briefly and nods at Dean's statement.]
I could stand guard with you for a while -- if you don't mind. [Even if they're standing here quietly, Castiel would be fine with that. It's his way of showing that there are no hard feelings after their argument, if that isn't already clear.]

Souji would rather not talk about things that are this important to him when there's an event going on. It's clearly messing with them--or at least with James. Souji hasn't noticed anything strange in his own behavior, but it's possible that he wouldn't; James seemed unaware that he was acting particularly odd.

He looks over at James, trying to gauge whether or not there's any point, before deciding that even if it does turn out to be pointless, it will at least make James feel better. So he relents.

"...Okay."

"...Okay."

Of course Sam would assume that. He's been through so much as a hunter, has been yanked this way or that, plagued with addictions or a literal devil on his shoulder. It had also taken some time for Castiel to put the pieces together, but after enough time spent around Crowley, it had become painfully clear.

"It seems that everyone's affected," he says, exhaling a small sigh as he shifts away from the scene of his memory. As if he doesn't want to taint it with more unfortunate news.

"Actually pinpointing who you're linked to might take some luck, however." Castiel's not sure if some people are being paired off with complete strangers, but he certainly wouldn't be surprised if that were the case.

“It has been sometimes.” It feels a little silly to try and smile when she’s very aware that Steve knows her emotional state. Yet it’s also habit, putting on a calm face even in moments that seem so chaotic as this. That’s how she’s been able to last, not just as Tony’s girlfriend but even before, when her career literally revolved around keeping him together even as he earned every bit of reputation as a playboy. And Steve is right to think that Tony is unprepared for the world he’s thrown himself into. After this moment of joy, his stability cracks in ways even Pepper’s never seen before.

And she hadn’t seen them then, or realized how deeply they ran.

It’s sobering to think about, which makes her answer to Steve’s suggestion all the easier to think about. “No, that’s okay. I’m ready to go too.” Not only because Steve’s heart is tied to hers, making this all the more awkward for them both, but because she doesn’t want to put herself through watching this figment of memory any longer. No doubt she’ll be back, just to hear his voice say the words she’s already memorized, but for now there’s more bitter than sweet for her in this room. So she motions for him to lead the way out, but not before adding another thought.

“You know, neither of us wants to be going through this—but I’m glad I got tied to you, Steve.”

That had to have been a hard way to meet: to be lied to, manipulated by someone so earnest as Wendy Darling. But Neal can’t blame her for it, any more than he can Henry for the way he’d chosen to try and be a hero. They both had their reasons, and the choices they made had been done with good intentions. Unfortunately, Peter Pan just knew how to play all of them for fools.

“She was trying to protect her brothers. Hell, she wouldn’t have been in Neverland at all except they all went to try and save me.” Which is crazy to think about; they’d all spent centuries worth of time in that place, and Neal never had a clue she’d been there. “She’d already lost her parents and her home. She was just trying to help the family she had left.”

And under Pan’s control or not, that desire to keep her family safe had always been there.

“She was nice. When we first met, I’d broken into her house. I had been living on the streets for months. Probably hadn’t eaten in days, so I stole some bread. She caught me though. Her and the dog.”

Nana. Neal had been sure that dog was going to maul him or something.

“When she figured out what I was doing, she not only offered me food, but a home.” He grins a little to think about it. “It was the first time anyone had been kind to me since I left the Enchanted Forest.”

Since his father had broken their deal, and chosen power over his son.

She can’t quite help the guilty pang in her stomach when Peggy makes that attempt at a grin, the result half-hearted at best. She shouldn’t have just wandered in; these emotions aren’t even hers, and it feels cheap to fall back on them as a reason for her intrusion. Yet at the same time, Pepper has felt like she just might go crazy if she didn’t indulge them, at least a little. Maybe when Peggy hears the other side of what the event has done, she might be more willing to forgive Pepper the slight.

“There’s another part to what’s going on.” Her eyes stray towards Bucky as well, lingering longer than they should. It’s hard to think of a man in the middle of a war as innocent, but compared to what he’s become? That’s exactly what Bucky had been, once, before HYDRA stole that life—killed him, not in the way everyone suspected, but one arguably far worse.

Pepper lets out a quiet breath, pulling her focus away from that regret.

“Each of us seems to be emotionally connected to someone else. Those two people each feel what the other does.” At least in that Pepper has had some fortune. She nods towards Steve, a smile once more playing over her lips. “I’ve been tied to Steve, who apparently is pretty worried about you.” Among other things, but Pepper doesn’t want to say more than she should. Clearly the situation is much more complicated than she could have guessed, but it’s not her place to make Peggy aware of that.

She wanted me to stay in the North, I should have listened.

[ catelyn stark had tried to ask her, did she not? but sansa was young and stupid and enamored with the beauty of the south, with the handsomeness of prince joffrey, with the silks of the queens' dresses, with the idea of becoming a queen. ]

If I had stayed with her, mayhaps none of this would happen. I was stupid, I thought life was beautiful and sweet but they are not.

Beiste tilts her head, but doesn't respond at first. Emotional pull? Is that something the event is doing, maybe? Dang, she wishes that wasn't the first place her mind goes.

"Hm. If that's an event thing, that might be bad, but...there's nothing dangerous in here, so far as I can tell." A little more shyly, she adds. "And I think it might be an event thing, 'cause now that you mention it, I've been feelin' a little all over the place, myself. I thought it was this memory, but..."

Well, she supposes it explains why she was tempted to try and put goofy hats on the boys an hour or so ago, just for laughs.

"Uh, you can come in, if you want, but it's not-- I mean, it's probably not all that interesting or anything." She steps aside nonetheless, trying hard not to totally discount her own interests as she continues, "I mean, it was my job and I loved it, but not all girls are gonna be so into passionate halftime speeches, heh."

As an afterthought, she adds, "Oh, I'm Shannon Beiste, by the way."

"Sometimes I'm glad that they're not." Whilst she could agree that mostly Wonderland wasn't that bad there were still things that happened here unrelated to the events - some things which were a lot more terrible than anything that Wonderland ever did. They'd never have to know what happened to her, and when they left they wouldn't remember all that bad anyway.

"But it's not the same without them around. Not when you're used to it."

Even from a distance it's easy to see the car - less the details on it but at least the shape of it, and the fact that there's something off the ground. The stage is built up, letting people be able to see what's happening no matter how far away they are, which is a good thing considering how many people have turned out. Stark is clearly a popular, or intelligent guy.

Lydia tips her head back to look up at Bucky at his question, a small smile gracing her expression. "I like seeing what people can do." There are so many wonders of the world, more than just the wonders that are Wonders with a capital. Brains are amazing things.

"Science is pretty amazing." Yes those words did come from a teenage girl's mouth. Even in her time those words aren't something that are that often said - especially not from someone like Lydia, on first appearances.

There's a thoughtful hum as Lydia looks around the scene again, watching it play out for a few moments as she thinks about it. They're in a war, Lydia knows that just from knowing when Steve and Bucky were (originally) from, although the decor of the place is a little bit of a giveaway too. Steve is their leader, they're behind him - friends and soldiers. Lydia understands that part, but it's not the part she's most curious about.

She turns as the room changes to the part of Steve and Bucky talking alone, until the woman walks along. Bucky's words to the empty Steve space obviously had some meaning too. A kid from Brooklyn versus who Steve was now. Captain America. What had changed there?

"What did Bucky mean? About who he was following?" Lydia had seen Steve when he'd been smaller - not just in body size but in height too. He'd been an adult at his shorter height, so it wasn't just growing. Working out couldn't do that. She'd never asked what had happened, but she hadn't thought much about it to think there was anything strange going on there.

So Lilith has lost all faith in Lucifer, then? She must have finally realized that he had no consideration for her, that she was barely a blip on his radar. She only holds value to Lucifer as far as her usefulness as a tool.

Castiel's own Father is certainly a sensitive subject these days, although he's also gotten used to the less tactful rubbing of that in his face. Still, what Lilith said then, there was no lie in it. Heaven had unraveled before his eyes, steeped in corruption so great it would have impressed most of Hell's denizens.

"And what path have you chosen? Now that you understand that Lucifer holds no love for you." It's preferable he gets the topic off of himself.

Curious as Steve might be, this isn't the time or place to be asking about Tony's past breakdowns. It's not for him to know, it's not his business, and he's seen enough of Tony's fraying, both during the Battle of New York and here in Wonderland, to have an idea of what Pepper's had to contend with in the past.

Pepper's ready to go, which really isn't any surprise. She's now aware that anything she feels while in this room will be broadcast right to Steve, so it makes sense that she'd rather leave it behind, at least for now. Steve nods and climbs back up the stairs toward the interior of the plane, although that instantly warps into the seventh floor corridor in Wonderland.

It's a little disorienting, but he adjusts quickly enough.

"The feeling is mutual," he says in reply to Pepper, reaching out once she's close enough to lay a hand on her shoulder and give it an encouraging squeeze. There's actually a moment of relief shared between them, which is nice. Steve takes a look around, though, and makes what should have been an obvious observation, though it only occurs to him right then.

"We're gonna have to figure out where to sleep, seeing how Wonderland abducted our beds," he points out with a sigh.

"The same one that I've told you about before." She said, giving a small huff, turning away from him. "I'm surviving, nothing more." The reminder of Lucifer's pressing of her to make friends and be his eyes and ears. His response to her turning him down and questioning his methods.

He didn't take her rebellion well, but she still maintained her path.

"I'm not about to get myself killed by making more enemies than I have or by antagonizing my enemies." Beyond her teasing, that is.

[It's difficult to look at someone so young and see that she's so full of regret, but how could she be anything else, when she's lost most of her family?

Still, blaming herself for how things turned out -- for other people's crimes -- won't do her any good. Steve may not be good at taking that advice himself, but he can definitely give it.]

You can't think like that. [He takes a seat next to her while making sure that there's still some space between them so she doesn't feel crowded.]

You can spend all of your life dwelling on what-ifs, but hey, things might have turned out worse if you'd stayed. There's no way of really knowing that kind of thing.

[And brooding on it won't change the facts, either.]

Her death isn't your fault, Sansa. It's the fault of the people who killed her.

She knows part of him wants to ask, and she’s thankful when he doesn’t. Instead he leads her out with an agreement that this partnership is one to be thankful for, and a reassuring touch once she reaches the top of the stairs. It’s the very reason why she feels that gratitude, and for a moment, their emotions sync. Such a small thing, and yet having that emotion layered within her has Pepper smiling perhaps a bit more brightly than she normally would.

At least until Steve points out that now, neither of them has a place to rest. But there’s an easy enough solution for the problem. “I have the gallery. It wouldn’t be hard to put a couple of beds in there.” Provided, of course, that Wonderland doesn’t have another surprise waiting there as well. The thought gives her reason to worry, and she glances over at Steve. “I should probably check to see if that room’s been changed too.”

She hesitates then, conflicted over whether she should ask him to come with her or stay behind. Either way, what Pepper feels Steve will share—and this time, she’ll go in fully aware that whatever she’s facing isn’t real. That more than anything else sways her decision; in the end, Pepper doesn’t want to face another phantom of her lover alone. “Would you come with me?”
